Hon W B Ebbert reports on the controversy between Northern Colorado beet growers and Great Western Sugar Co factories. The dispute centers on sugar beet pricing and the growers' demand against a lowered flat rate and the issue of siloing losss.
In Ebbert’s review the grower’s complaint is justified but a compromise is advised to avert losses from suspending northern sugar making. Morey notes the only split is 25 percent siloing for 50 cents per ton, says coop is possible, and that no siloing if crop is light or beets cut before Jan 1. Contracts for this year are being signed as growers’ opposition wanes.
The Katherine Ridgeway Company will appear at First M E church next Monday evening Feb 25 featuring Reader Katherine Ridgeway Baritone Andrew Schneider and Pianist Fay La Grange. The renowned troupe has been recalled to the same venue up to ten times and was secured a year ago. Tickets on sale at Avard's Pharmacy priced 60 and 75 cents with a 25 cent reduction for public school pupils.
The Rocky Ford water works unveils a modern gas producer system with two furnaces a Deane Triplex pump and a gas engine generating 100 hp. The plant promises fuel savings and improved reliability with duplicate equipment and self contained draught control. Fire protection was tested at 100 psi with four hydrants on So Main Street and the opera house dome watered during a 30 minute run.
Senator G W Swink undertakes a massive reservoir project south of Manzanola in the Arkansas Valley. The 2400 acre site features a 600 foot base, 45 foot high dike, and a 23 mile Apishapa ditch with many turns. Engineers estimate total cost near 200000, with 30000 spent so far, using 42 horses and 19 men. The Fowler Tribune notes two Swink portraits, one supervising his estate and the other in Denver with state leaders.
Miss Camma Mundell aged 19 years and 5 days died suddenly of rheumatism of the heart in Pueblo. Her remains were brought to Ordway for a Wednesday funeral at the Evangelical church conducted by Rev. Steinmetz. Employed in Pueblo as a stenographer, she belonged to a well known local family, with parents J T Mundell and wife. The body rests at Lake View cemetery.
J S Green reports the sale of two tracts to Lewis P Meyer the Rasmussen estate 12 acres and Mrs Jobes 8 acres. Meyer also sold 20 acres to Ernest McPeek before deed. City Realty Co sold the W Buck dwelling on South 12th street to Israel Santee of Swink.
The M. E. Ladies Union will continue the rummage sale on Saturday afternoons in the church basement until all goods are sold. A variety of excellent wearing apparel will be offered at very low prices. The Ridgeway Co. invites the public to hear the most popular reader today.
Col Lockhart of Lockhart Live Stock Co returned from Washington after a Roosevelt urged meeting with the Public Lands Commission on proposed leasing of unoccupied government lands. He supported gradual adoption to protect small stockmen while ensuring home development. Roosevelt and Pinchot spoke with delegates about balancing big and small herd interests. Roosevelt’s stance against a third term was affirmed. Also notes on a local spelling match and a horse sale ad. Seed oats for sale announced in Rocky Ford.
A Rocky Ford merchant launches a palatial clothing store in La Junta at the Dougherty block. The 10 o clock opening drew crowded attendance all day with Oak fixtures and gun metal finish, while Harry S Maxwell and partners greeted guests with morocco pocketbooks and cigars. Wonderly’s orchestra provided music as the venue hosted a hospitable reception for patrons and visitors.
Notice lists a Wednesday noon dinner at the W C T U Rest Room during the Farmers Institute. Proceeds fund comfort bags for sailors aboard the Colorado. Menu includes soup meat vegetables pudding pie all for 25 cents. Also items about land railways, seed sales, livestock, real estate loans, second hand goods, and local ads in Manzanola and Rocky Ford with multiple names and contacts.
