Philippines Attacked Major McCoy and Wife in Cebu

In San Francisco on April 23 Mrs Mae McCoy wife of Major Henry B McCoy of the Forty fourth regiment was attacked by Filipinos in the Cebu island area as the last transport to port sailed. The major repelled them with a club as two attackers died on the stairs and three were wounded. Mrs McCoy fled to Manila after the assault and later became the first American woman to land in Manila aboard a mail steamer describing her garden efforts in Cebu. The McCoys home is Pueblo Colorado.

Guggenheim group gains control of Ameri can Smelting board

An adjourned directors meeting of the American Smelting and Refining Company amended by laws to allow Guggenheim interests to sit on the board. Directors increase from sixteen to twenty one with five Guggenheim brothers added. Daniel Guggenheim elected chairman and Simon Guggenheim named secretary. A separate note documents the formation of the Southwestern Live Stock Quarantine Association across seven states with Dr. F Luckey president and William E Bolton secretary to coordinate inspections.

Sheep Starvation Report From Wasatch Range

Reports from Cheyenne indicate sheep are starving near Wasatch on the Wyoming Utah line due to scarce feed and overcrowded ranges. No hay is available in the vicinity and unless grass returns soon, heavy losses are expected.

Denny Firm Nears Completion of Flying Machine

At Dumbarton on April 22 Archie Denny disclosed his firm nearly finished a flying machine for a client. Designed by young Spaniard Vergara, who arrived with his father from Spain after successful model tests. The device should be completed and tested within a fort night. Vergara is modest about the invention, but it appears to hold substantial practicality and novelty to interest the Dennys.

Ohio River Flood Subsiding in Pittsburgh Area

The flood is over in Pittsburgh and there is no danger of another rise at this point or upstream for now. Downriver towns remain at risk due to recent rains in the valley overnight and today.

The Presidents Train Triumphs On Pacific Voyage

The special 10 000 mile round trip train for the President and party includes engine, seven cars, Atlantic baggage smoking car, St James dining car, two seven-room compart ment cars named Omena and Diana, two twelve-section sleepers Pellon and Charmion, private car Olympia for the President and Mrs Mc Kinley on the outbound leg, and Campania for the return. It promises to be one of the finest trains ever to run on the railroad.

Aguinaldo Sees Pacification Path After Capture Visit

Emilio Aguinaldo spoke with reporters at Mb Solano street after being moved from Malacanan. He praised American aims, urged insurgents to surrender, and expressed openness to a future visit to the United States while seeking peace and prosperity under American rule. His remarks referenced leaders Tinie Lusban Malvar and the amnesty offer, with gratitude for military courtesy.

Death of Edwin S. Nettleton Pioneer Colorado Engineer

Edwin S. Nettleton a Denver based irrigation engineer and former state engineer died of heart disease at Homeopathic Hospital after a brief illness. Born 1832 in Medina Ohio he helped found Greeley Colorado Springs and Manitou and directed major canal projects. Survived by wife and daughter, son predeceased, body to be sent to Kansas City for burial.

Missouri Pacific Moves to Absorb Rio Grande

Missouri Pacific directors authorize a $30 million increase to total $100 million in capital stock. A stockholders meeting will ratify the action and may offer new shares to take up Denver & Rio Grande preferred and common stock. Details on issue price were not available.

The Colorado State Sunday School Association will hold its annual convention at the First Presbyterian church in Colorado Springs on May 7 8 and 9. The opening session begins at 7 30 Tuesday evening.

Libel Trial Set For Patterson and Hill

Judge Mullins of Denver District Court denied motions to quash in two criminal libel actions brought by T. M. Patterson against William Stapleton and Crawford Hill of the Denver Republican. The cases proceed to jury trial on May 13.
