April term of Spencer circuit court opens with busy docket

The April term of Spencer circuit court will begin next week with a large civil docket including several major damage suits. The grand jury will meet, and trials are slated for April 3 through April 30 at various dates. Listed cases include Stevenson vs Myransville Bys Co, Grigsby foreclosure, Conner petition to modify order, and multiple damages, note, and mortgage actions. Jury panels are named for petit and grand juries.

Tornado Wreck in New Cartle Spurs Reconstruction Plans

Sheriff Floyd Chapman visited New Cartle last Saturday with Cyril Haug of Dale to the state Institution for epileptics. He surveyed the tornado wreckage as four hundred men clear debris. Officials expect rebuilding house for house within months. Community contributions exceed one hundred thousand dollars statewide.

Presbyterian Social Banquet in G A R Hall

A banquet hosted by the Ladies Aid of the Presbyterian church at the G A R hall drew fifty four guests. Toasts covered Church, Membership, Missionary Society, Church and Community, The Church Bell, and Ladies Aid as the room featured spring flowers and an American flag mood. The event ended with a sing of Auld Lang Syne and handshakes.

Shell Buyer James Pruitt Plans Louisiana Shelling Expansion

James Pruitt of Amsterdam, buyer for Soaper & Co., bought a gasoline launch in Rockport to reach the Ouachita River beds in Louisiana. He will supervise up to a hundred men extracting shells daily, citing a ton per day potential for skilled workers and expecting many shellers to follow him to the new beds in the coming weeks.

New Veranda hotel contract awarded in Rockport

Contractor John Pyle will start construction next week on the New Veranda hotel a three story structure with modern conveniences. Stockholders include Henry Maas Thomas W Savage John Pyle Benj Huffman and James Gentry Jr the Masonic lodge of Rockport contracted for the third floor. The hotel will have twenty guest rooms plus a lodge hall dining room lobby and living spaces but has not yet been rented.

Clarence Wright grandson of George W. Marsh wins a suit to set aside the 1909 will in the Spencer Gibson circuit court after a week of evidence and four wallets. He seeks his legal share of an estate valued around 80 000 noting the will left others sums and land to various Marsh grandchildren and heirs. Attorneys cited include RR. W. Armstrong Arch Stevenson James I. Gessten and Swan Mason Boyd Harmon.

Little Theatre Society presents April performances in Spencer County

The Little Theatre Society of Spencer County rehearses for two April shows on the 13th and 14th. Following the success of Arms and the Man they stage a mixed program with The Sleeping Car and The Gentle Jury, then The Pied Piper of Hamlin with 385 children, plus The Greek Fantasy dance and the Grand View quartet.

Perry Phillips of Pigeon Switch hosted a farewell dinner for his daughter Mrs. Lou Williams and granddaughter Stella of Nicker Son Kansas. One hundred four guests attended with sixty staying for supper. Attendees included relatives and visitors from Evansville Boonville Tennyson Lincoln Gearyville Princeton and Rockport. Directors authorize Warrick subsidies refund plan

At a meeting the Evansville Chrissev andastern Railway directors named J P Onrisney Jas A Hemenway Truman P Tilman J E Cox and Gus Mulhansen approved a resolution allowing Warrick County Commissioners to repay Boon and Hart townships taxpayers the subsidies tied to the line. Grass township also voted a subsidy but no authorization has reached the auditor.

Rockport Rifle Club Plans Patriot Event Parade

The Rockport Rifle Club moved toward a large patriotic demonstration to be held in Rockport at a future date. The plan calls for a big parade with citizens Boy Scouts Civil and Spanish War veterans followed by speeches and patriotic songs to express renewed local patriotism.

Adjudged Insane Woman Seeks Admission to Woodmere

Last Monday Mrs. Nettie Mahn of Hammond township was examined for sanity in Abel Mosby’s justice court by Drs. White and Stateville. Evidence found her insane, linked to recent surgery and suffering, with fear she might harm herself. An application was made Wednesday morning for admission to Woodmere.

Public highway duties shift to township trustees

An act abolishing township road supervisor offices transfers duties to township trustees. In Spencer County the change promises savings of 2455.22 with increased trustee salaries to match extra work. Auditor Stocking reports 1915 salaries: trustees 4561.00. supervisors 3560.22, plus county totals and per township figures.

The Woman's Franchise League gathered at Mrs L Weiner's Rockport home Thursday afternoon to study the constitution and local politics. A second meeting was also held at Mrs Weiner's home the same day to plan a course of study for Rockport women.

Meeting for Spencer County Five Acre Contest Officers

C L Hammond calls a meeting tomorrow March 31 in Rockport at the First National bank building at 2 p m to elect officers for 1917. All corn growers are invited to join for next year with many prizes. Gold medals go to those making 100 bushels per acre on five acres or more and silver medals to 85 to 99 bushels. Past three years saw 995 growers join. 23 earned gold medals and county prizes. Average yield was 65 bushels per acre. plan to arrange a boys and girls contest this year.

The M W E G A gathered at Mrs. Guy Walker’s home last Thursday to celebrate four years of their organization. Flowers adorned the scene as young daughters of the society performed on the program. The event culminated with the cutting of a large birthday cake during refreshments.
