A freak lightning event strikes several animals, rendering them blind despite little immediate injury. The incident occurred during a bizarre weather episode. Records note the animals showed sudden eye damage with no other visible wounds. Authorities investigated potential causes and safety implications for livestock in the area.
A thunderstorm struck the Miller farm at Richey’s Crossing injuring and blinding two mules and one horse. The bolt also killed two three year old draft colts belonging to Joshua Shrode at the Stateler farm, valued at $300 and insured for $50 each.
About fifty five Rebekahs from Rockport and area traveled to Grandview Tuesday to institute a lodge. Around twenty five initiated, starting with thirty five members. Delegation included Dr D W McClary Mrs Lula B Kean Miss Florence McGregor and Philip Zoercher. Officers named Noble Grand Mrs S S Lamar Vice Grand Mrs Vernon Herron etc. Ice cream and cake served after the ceremony.
A stranger who stole a horse was tracked to Phillips who surrendered the animal and demanded his own horse from Lowery, which was returned, leaving Lowery without a horse. The thief, who had hired the rig at Monroe City, was last heard of in Newburg last Sunday and remains at large as the Monroe City liveryman pursues him.
Isaac N. Shrode, 68, died last Thursday at his home in Chrisney after a months long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday under the I. O. O. F. lodge, of which he was a charter member formed 38 years ago. A Civil War veteran, he served in the 25th Indiana regiment and was a longtime resident since Chrisney’s founding.
Miss Maude E. James and Wm. H. Forsythe were married at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at Mrs. B. E. James's home on 4th Street. Rev. R. W. Fish officiated. Only family attended. Couple left for Niagara Falls and Toronto and will reside in Grandview after July 5. Both are well regarded in Grandview and Rockport.
The city council met Wednesday evening and instructed the engineer to place grade stakes on Vine Street. Teams will work there to grade the street. A proposal to combine storm and sanitary sewers to save costs was discussed further. The health officer asked Main Street property owners be required to tap the sanitary sewer.
The Democrat notes hoagland and hardy form a new produce firm from John Mason Hoagland and Courtney M. Hardy. They operate at the Hardy corner on Main and Second streets replacing the T. R. Hardy Company with roots tracing to 1852 and sixty years of local warehouse use.
W. W. Medcalf aged around seventy died suddenly Sunday at his home in Princeton from heart disease. He is survived by a wife and three daughters. Medcalf grew up in Dale, son of the late Captain C. W. Medcalf, and practiced law in Rockport for many years.
Washington notes reveal testimony linking top officials to trust dealings. Wickersham admits fees from the sugar trust as he led prosecutions. Kellogg is cited for dual roles with the steel and trust interests. Bristow and allies clash over direct Senate elections while Champ Clark defends employee grievances access. La Follette emerges as a real challenge to Taft renomination.
The State Board of Health starts a sanitary survey of the Ohio River on a three person team led by Jay Cravens. They will measure pollution from cities towns and factories from the Indiana boundary to the river’s end, using a houseboat laboratory to analyze samples aboard.
The Democrat lists graduates from Chicago University dated June 18. Indiana names include John Mason Houghland of Rockport earning the Ph B degree and Elijah Jordan of Oakland City receiving the Ph D. designation.

County Superintendent J W Strassell presented diplomas to 192 graduates. Boonville fair debuts a Purdue livestock judging contest for non enrolled youths with pre contest instruction and strategy sessions.
At the May examination the following applicants made a necessary grade for license to teach Ida Greathouse Mrs. Anne Hinks Edith Brother W. P. Meeks Mrs. Helen Baumgartner Mrs. Della Oldham Amelia Spayd Georgia McFarland W. K. Fischer Minnie B. Miller W. T. Ray and Mrs. Alma Mann No report has been had from the state.
A large Lieb and Artman lumber yard warehouse burned Wednesday night at eight o clock. It housed dressed lumber doors windows and building materials. The loss exceeds $24 000 with over $10 000 not covered by insurance. Firefighters noted the building was locked and the cause remains unknown after three car loads of lumber had been stored that week.
Taylor C. Basye of this city was elected president at a meeting in Indianapolis last Thursday. Terre Haute was chosen as the site for the next gathering. Speakers advocated newspaper advertising as the best medium, outlining reasons for this choice. Basye assumed the new post.
Deputy Auditors W H Kennedy and Mrs Lizzie B Wright completed the half year settlement showing net funds of 118406.60 after deductions. School funds total 17918.43 and county revenue 42173.70 with township apportionments listed for Luce Ohio Hammond Huff Harrison Carter Jackson Grass Clay Rockport School Grandview St Meinrad Dale Gentryville Chrisney and civil districts.

Workmen began tearing down the Gabbert and Daviz buildings at 3rd and Main as Charles Lieb buys the property to erect a fine brick structure adjoining his corner building. The project promises a marked improvement to that stretch of Main Street.
Evansville Senator Wm B Carleton has written the 4th of July committee accepting an invitation to speak in Rockport on the 4th and will surely be there. He says collective belief in a common cause will make the association profitable.
