Spencer County Independence Day Celebration Set for July Fourth

Spencer County gears up for a wartime Independence Day celebration in Rockport with the Supreme Honor Flag from the Liberty Loan drive, a parade, and unfurling of Old Glory and allied flags. W S Sonntag plans to present the flag. a regimental band from a cantonment is expected. Leaders from towns will give brief remarks at three minutes each before the 1:00 p.m. parade through the fairgrounds.

Letters From the Battle Trenches Relate Prizes and Travel

A WWI era letter from Pvt Fletcher Peek describes mail delays, service stripes, packing limits, and longing for home. He notes seeing summer weather, equipment weight, and hopes to return soon, while praising the organ photo and service flag. Neville Bise also sends a France arrival report detailing voyage safety, French landscape, Y M C A aid, currency exchange, and leisure amid training near the front.

Ford Auto Out of Commission After Ditch Crash

Burl Johnson and Buster More, two about 12 year olds, drove Walter Ray's Ford into a ditch at Vine and Lincoln streets Sunday. They sped through Vine, then hit a crossing stone on Lincoln, crushing the right front wheel and windshield. The car was damaged extensively and the boys fled on foot, later arrested by Marshal Chappell. They had taken the car without the owner's permission and are boarding at the county's expense.

Uriah Butler Chapman Dies in Spencer County Death Notices

Uriah B Chapman born 1862 died June 13 1918 a Spencer County citizen related to old settlers. He married Jennie Woodward in 1886 and left seven sons and two daughters. Funeral by Odd Fellows and Baptist pastor Daniel. Interred at New Hope Cemetery.

Piggott Marries Miss Rowland in Paducah

County agent W. J. Piggott and Miss Francis Dorothy Rowland were wed at First Presbyterian church Paducah on June 11. Rev. Peter Pluene officiated. After a brief bridal tour they returned to Rockport with the bride and reside at Judge Swan's home on South Fourth Street.

Rhodes trusteeship and sons' naval service noted

Rhodes a Carter township trustee was in the city on business. His son Sylvester, 19, volunteered for the navy wireless service and, after six weeks at Great Lakes, passed the wireless operator exam and will train at Harvard University. Young Rhodes has worked as a Southern Railway operator while in high school and recently enlisted, visiting Lincoln City this week before leaving for Harvard next Tuesday.

Mule Runs Away On Elm Street Injures Rider

A mule hitched to a buggy ran away on Elm Street last Saturday dragging Mrs. Alvey Rudisil and her two boys. The mule turned north at 5th and Elm, upset the buggy, causing scratches to Mr. Rudisil while the children remained uninjured. The buggy and harness were demolished after the mule fled at an automobile.

Silver Dale Food Conservation Club Meeting Highlights

The Silver Dale Food Conservation Club reports a large member absence due to harvest and shares a briefing on bread making with substitutes for flour. Members organized a Junior Red Cross, heard Hoover's appeal to conserve wheat, and discussed war-time thrift across homes and training stations.
