Alphabetic draft of county conscription lists for young men

The county conscription board completes alphabetic ordering of all registered youths by voting precincts. Several volunteer young ladies assisted in arranging and numbering registration cards, with copies to state adjutant general, the governor, and possibly Washington. The published portion lists names by townships and precincts, beginning Luce and Jackson, with ages 21 to 30, showing many Abshire, Ferguson, Yeager, and others.

Campaign to move Moore's Hill College to Evansville

A plan to raise 259000 to establish a million dollar Moore's Hill College in Evansville is outlined. The drive targets residents within fifty miles of Evansville with support from Methodists and other faiths. Leaders Hughes and Cissna note local students largely stay within fifty miles of home, and launching Sunday will feature educational leaders at district churches.

Gravel Diggers Start Gravel Work for Hoffman Road

A gravel digging outfit arrived from Grandview and began work on the bar seat above the upper landing to dig gravel for the John Hoffman road.

County Education Board Plans July 3 Commencement

The county board met at the County Superintendent Strassell’s office to arrange the county commencement set for Grandview Chautauqua on Tuesday July 3. Details include uniform dress for graduates with presidential portrait badges and class colors, and a 10 cent per day transfer fee between townships. Hon. Fred G Bale of Columbus will give the address. William J Bryan may appear if contracted, likely August 5 at 2 p.m.

Pyle to report to West Point after exam success

Charles A. Pyle son of Mr and Mrs John F Pyle leaves for Chicago then West Point to report Thursday at seventeen he passed exams and was named second alternate for West Point appointment by ex congressman Charles Lieb. Rock Port will have one West Point student and Ralph Roberts will enter Annapolis in September.

Packet Co. to Enter Large Motor Boat on Evansville Route

The Louisville and Evansville Packet Co plans to add a large, swift motor boat within two weeks to run a daily round trip between Gannelton and Evansville. The new vessel, already operating Owensboro to Ryansville, will replace the Bedford during overhaul at Paducah, with Bedford slated to resume trade in about 19 days.

Spencer County Voter Registration For September 18 Election

The Spencer county board met in the court room to register voters for the September 18 constitutional convention delegates. Anthony Stevenson chaired with clerks John Huffman and F A Hearing. fifty registrations occurred the first day including twenty four women and twenty six men. Street numbers to be supplied. two duplicate blanks prepared for each party.

Spencer County School Superintendent Election Deadlock

A Spencer county recess meeting of the trustees at the auditor's office produced a six ballot deadlock for superintendent. J. W. Strassell and FortU. S. Lindsey each received four votes per ballot, Edwin Howe one. A Friday afternoon session was planned if no election occurred, potentially leaving Strassell in office.

Library board committee distributes books in remote township

A library board committee visited several township sections last Friday to leave books for readers with limited access. The group, returning after a few hours with all books distributed, plans regular Friday visits to remote areas to drop off and collect books, and received cordial welcomes.

DIES IN ARIZONA Abijah Crowder of Hatfield

Abijah Crowder aged 28 years 2 months and 11 days died in Phoenix Arizona where he had moved six months prior for health. Funeral held Tuesday at the M E church in Hatfield with Rev Clarence Shake officiating. He was unmarried and survived by four brothers George B R Hayes Salem and Eugene. son of the late Henry Crowder.

Tax settlement shows 1917 first installment collections

The semi annual settlement sheet of the first tax installment for 1917 is complete with total collections just over $125,000. State received $18,629.06, county $2,217.12, and townships and towns $76,308.25. Warrants issued for the respective amounts.

City Men Enlist in U S Cavalry for War Service

Fred Webb Russell Martin and Welker of this city went to Huntingburg last Monday to enlist in the cavalry. The boys passed the medical examination at Huntingburg and left Tuesday morning for Indianapolis for further examination and assignment.

The National Biscuit Co. ball team from Evansville visited Grand View on Sunday afternoon to play the local squad and won 3 to 0. The biscuit makers dominated the game with strong pitching and steady defense.

Rockport organizes a wartime county fair style Independence Day gathering at the fair grounds on July 4.
