Young Powell prominent Hammond township figure died suddenly at his home two miles northeast of Newtonville on December 15 1909 after a dinner stroke. He was born September 8 1833 in Spencer county Indiana and survived by five children Harriet S D Powell James L Henry C and A A. Funeral held December 18 at New Hope conducted by Rev R A Stevens. He was highly esteemed in the county.

Accidental Shoot Wounds Claude Beeler Near Rockport
Beeler living two miles west of Rockport was shot in the face last Saturday when his nephew Jackson, while hunting, discharged a gun toward the ground. About ten pellets struck Beeler in the face and shoulder. Dr J R Lang treated him and he remains at home for a few days.

Two Barns Burn on Nichols Farm South of Town
Fire destroyed two barns on the Rose and Ed Nichols farm four miles south of town at about 9 PM Wednesday. About 600 bushels of corn, 2000 pounds of tobacco, a buggy, and farm implements were lost. The barns and some crops were insured for 1150 dollars. Will Garvin and Ales Frields had corn and tobacco inside but insurance status unknown. Authorities believe arson.
