Two men were arrested after being seen stealing corn in the river bottoms opposite Owensboro. Police report the pair used ongoing methods to pilfer rows, prompting pursuit and capture. Both suspects await charges.
A river bottom theft ring near Owensboro Kentucky yielded a hog and a skiff stolen from farms. George Terrell and Louis Hester pleaded guilty to hog theft. Sam Beard faced charges for receiving hog shares. Police traced the crime across the river and into Indiana with multiple arrests and preliminary hearings.
Denton Horton and Miss Pennie Mahon of Muhlenburg county Ky were married last Saturday evening by Squire Wm Jones at his office. The ceremony finished quickly and Squire Jones moved to the clerk's office to wed Robert H Trissler and Daisy Barnett of Daviess county Ky and Paul V Vittetow and Frieda M Weyerbacher of Henderson Ky. The three couples then left for their homes across the river.
The Garnet chapter No 146 C. KE. 8 elected officers for the ensuing year with Mrs Grace Pattie as W M, Mr Clint Davis as W P, Mrs Olive Mayhall as A M, Mrs Carrie V Brug e as Bevy, Mrs Sally Morgan as Treasurer, Mrs Grace Mason as Conductor, and Mrs Masy Payne as A C.
Rockport school authorities urge parent cooperation to curb contagious diseases. A health officer quarantine rule enforces isolation and placards for infected premises. The Evansville and Eastern railway opened its Evansville Newburg extension to service on Tuesday linking Evansville with Newburg through-line. Locals anticipate increased freight and passenger movement as trains begin regular runs along the new route.
The Evansville and Hastern electric line opened the Newbury extension to Rockport last Tuesday with a special car carrying road officials and invited guests. The route shortens travel between Evansville and Rockport with fares set at one dollar for Evansville Rockport and 35 cents for Newburg Evansville. Construction took six months. the line is owned by a separate company but financed by the Tennis company. Regular service runs from Evansville starting 6:05 a.m. to 7:05 p.m., and Rockport departures from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., plus through car at 9:40 p.m.
Grandview and citizens D E Cadick George Wandel and Will H Wohler organized a corporation named Grandview Gas Company to supply gas rights to the town. Capital stock 5000 dollars with the town owning 80 shares and the three individuals holding 20 shares. Directors named for the first year. An acetylene gas plant to be built to light streets crosswalks and residences. Lighting of 20 street crossings with fifty candle power lamps contracted. work already begun with expectations of two to three months to illuminate the town.
Last Friday and Saturday the farmers institute at the courthouse was among the county’s most successful events. Officials elected for the year include Mell Swallow president Grant Johnson secretary and Ezekiel Powell treasurer. Township chairmen chosen are Luce James Ensor Ohio James Abshier Hammond A E Kruse Huff George Foertsch Harrison August Druschel Carter Joseph Schum Jackson William Hesson Clay Dixon Pennington Grass P A Atkinson.

Commissioners of Gibson County awarded seven concrete bridge contracts to A. P. Eigenmann. The action covers multiple bridge projects, signaling a substantial infrastructure push by the county government.
A. P. Eigenmann secured a Gibson county contract for seven concrete arch bridges at 6342 dollars total and Henry W. and Will P. Higenmann will build them. Gibson also awarded twenty four iron bridges to the Indiana Bridge company, due for completion by August first. Posey county awarded about eight miles of rock roads at 37000 dollars to be finished by December first 1909 by the same builders.
Wilson Moore died at his Walnut Street home last Saturday afternoon after a long illness of dropsy at age fifty seven. He is survived by his wife Emma Carleton a son Bert and daughter Jessie and by the late Susie Bray his first wife who died in January 1892. Funeral services were held at the family residence with pastors McCoy and Baldrey and he was buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery. He was married to Susie Bray July 23 1871 and to Emma Carleton in May 1892. He was a good citizen and neighbor.
The Spencer county board members Haines Wright Godbey Bridges and Taylor conducted a quarterly inspection December 9. Jail was clean with no prisoners. At the orphan's home 19 children, 8 boys and 11 girls, 15 in school, no illness, lights recommended. County farm had 21 inmates. Superintendent Thomas progressing well. Livestock counted six cattle seven horses forty one swine. Sixty five acres of wheat sown. Recommend new buildings. D S Tullis chairman J G Taylor secretary.
Rockport schools faced a diphtheria scare this week with several pupils kept out. The Seminary and new school buildings were disinfected with formaldehyde last Saturday, and the danger to children is likely minimal. Only one pupil is reported to have the disease.
The Vanderburg county Democrats met Saturday and nominated Jep Bertlesen, an Evansville businessman, to fill the vacancy caused by Senator Legeman's death. They adopted resolutions favoring repeal of the county option law and backing Major Menzies for U S Senator. The election is set for December 29. Republicans have nominated Begar Durre.
