Break-even formulas for feeder cattle economics
An Iowa Development Commission derived piece explains how to compute break-even points for cattle feeders. It uses examples with 450 lb calves at 60 per pound, corn at 2 or 32.00 per bushel, and 2 09 per ton supplement, showing revenue and cost thresholds to cover variable and fixed costs. It notes that small changes in feed costs or protein price markedly shift the break-even cwt, offering a practical formula for pricing feed and determining break-even points as costs fluctuate. The article is adapted from the Iowa Development Commission Newsletter and appears in Rock Valley Bee, September 26, 1973.
