Duane Dewel leads a bipartisan committee opposing a constitutional amendment for unlimited annual legislative sessions. He argues yearly meetings raise costs and spending, citing a $2.31 million tax payer bill for 175 days and near one billion spent on a reform program.
The Veterans Administration will pay up to 190 dollars monthly to educate each child of a deceased or service connected disabled veteran. Eligible sons and daughters typically aged 18 to 26 may receive up to 38 months of schooling or 36 months part time. Applications can be filed at the Des Moines VA Center. Special provisions cover special restorative training and early start in vocational retraining for disabled youths. More than 125,000 students have benefited since 1956. The First Christian Church of Sac Chey marked its 75th anniversary.
Monday morning collision on 19th Avenue at 13th Street involved Mrs. Hewel John Roorda in a 1987 Chevrolet and Mrs. Tena Vogelzang in a 1960 Ford. Police say about $200 damage to the Vogelzang car and $100 to the Roorda vehicle. a summons was issued to Mrs. Roorda for failure to yield the right of way.
Northwest Iowa Vocational School announces a ten week evening course in investment analysis starting Wednesday October 9. Ivan Van Omteren will lead with R G Dickinson and Co as main actors. Sioux County Republican Woman's Organization planned campaign activities for state and national candidates. A district meeting is set for September 28 at the Sheraton Warrior Hotel in Sioux City with Congressman Wiley Mayne as speaker. A dessert luncheon is tentatively planned for October 18 at the Holland House in Sioux Center.
The Ninth District American Legion and Auxiliary will hold a fall conference in Paulina on Saturday September 21 with 960 representatives from 98 posts expected. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. at the Legion Hall, events include a service school, destruction school, and an afternoon meeting led by District Commander Leonard Keawell. A joint noon banquet features national and district leaders, with Auxiliary sessions at the Methodist Church and memorial and color guard ceremonies.

Northwest Iowa Vocational School offers an evening Aviation Ground School starting September 80 for thirteen weeks from 7 10 p m at NIVS building 6na west of Sheldon. The course prepares for a private pilot license covering navigation meteorology aerodynamics flight computer aircraft performance and FAA written exam with Elmer Muecke as instructor. The G R A meeting held September 8 at 7 30 PM voted against joining the separate G R A group to access camp benefits. Golleyball kickoff set. Round Robin tournament to begin next meeting. Dues set at twenty five cents, paid to Treasurer Helen Rook by September 23.

Sioux County Democratic Central Committee chair John Stegeman announced the State Democratic Caravan will stop in Grange City on September 19. The caravan arrives around 6:46 AM for coffee and features candidates for governor, U S Senate, treasurer, attorney general, and other offices.
NIVS announces a five week course on servicing transistorized amplifiers beginning September 9 in Room 10 at Northwest Town Vocational School Sheldon. Hegg Memorial Hospital Auxiliary votes to repeat the popular Parade of Homes with aOctober date set after last year’s success. The group plans a Christmas baggar and bake sale in November with over two hundred members participating. Guest speaker Cap Meyers discussed Sioux County Welfare and Food Stamp eligibility.
State University of Iowa announces a leadership developments correspondence course for northwest Iowa to begin in October with six lessons and a seventh group meeting. Open to all. materials cost $5. Enrollment closes by late September via the Sioux County Extension Office in Orange City. participation also planned in O'Brien Lyon and Osceola counties.
Petty Officer Larry Ver Mulm, son of Mrs. Frances Ver Mulm, arrived home September 13 after a year with the SeeBees in Vietnam where he served as an electrician. After a 50 day leave he will depart for Sicily, Italy, Monday through Friday, amid increased traffic town streets and highways as school buses carry a valuable cargo. Drive to keep that cargo alive.
A Sioux Electric Cooperative Association delegation, about 780 Iowa and Illinois attendees, attended the NRECA Region meeting in Des Moines on September 17. Board members Gillis Haverditk Harald Vemeer H J Shoemaker Charles F Gaver Peter Dorkaut John Koster Dean A Lehmidt and Manager Eugene Mulder participated. The session aimed to inform local leaders about the national cooperative’s work and rural electrification issues, followed by the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives annual meeting at the same hotel. Noted speakers included Norman Clapp Rural Electrification Administration Carl Hamilton and Robert P B Partidge.
Two Rock Valley City Council members Maurice Van Voorst and Bill Van Maanen joined a D C session sponsored by Congressman Wiley Mayne. The purge of the meeting aimed to acquaint veterans leaders with government programs available for municipalities.
