Cattle Marketings Seen Rising Then Easing Through 1974

Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell says fed cattle marketings will rise in the next six weeks before easing this winter and then rebound. He expects little sustained price strength this fall with higher prices likely this winter and possible further decline in spring and early summer 1974. He notes total cattle on feed rose about three percent to 12.1 billion October 1, with state gains led by Iowa and Western states up four percent. Futrell foresees marketing volume from now to December near last year’s level, heavier cattle on feed signaling larger slaughter potential, and a possible five percent plus reduction in December through early 1974. He cites grass conditions and favorable feeder pricing supporting larger placements on feed this fall and winter, likely yielding larger marketings by late spring or early summer, with prices potentially weakening briefly before spring and summer demand improves as retail beef prices adjust downward and pork-beef price relationships favor beef.
