Rock Valley organizations are urged to send three representatives to a VFW hosted meeting on March 16 at 6:90 p.m. to explore building a clinic or small hospital. Hartley representatives will discuss how their community built a 27 bed hospital.
The annual Sioux County and vicinity Sunday School convention will be held Thursday March 18 at First Reformed Church in Minneapolis led by Rev H Poppen. Rev Herbert Hazzard of Minneapolis will direct and speak, with morning, afternoon and evening sessions. the public is invited.
The Northwest Town TeleWriter Project nears its half year with large turnout. Rock Valley and six other centers report average weekly parent attendance over 1800, exceeding the 1500-1600 target. Professor George Immerzeel leads classes via two way electronic lectures from Cedar Falls using electronic Blackboard.
Dean R FP Patterson of the University of South Dakota told a Rock Valley Commercial Club audience that many US towns are shrinking but can survive with effort. He urged clean streets, recreation, libraries, hospital facilities, strong churches, a newspaper, and active merchants led by a civic club to guide development. Local leaders blessed the dinner and a film on community planning followed, stressing town pride and unity.
Richard Puda Vander Vel de is named president elect with John Kersbergen as vice president and John Kooima as secretary treasurer. Other board members include Dr R P Simonsen and O C Liaboe. Kenneth Ingram of the Mental Health Institute Cherokee speaks on treatment advances and hospital changes since 1946. He notes 1,750 patients then, 554 now under 22 doctors and 11 social workers, with many treated in their counties and tranquilizers aiding care. Rotarians plan patient programs at Valley Manor and later rides for seniors.
Funeral arrangements set for Mrs Ida Ver Maat 75 who died Tuesday in Sioux Center hospital. Services Friday 1:00 pm Porter Funeral Home and 1:30 pm at First Reformed Church Rock Valley with Rev H B Popper officiating. Born May 13 1889 in Holland she came to America and lived in the area most of her life. Survived by son Harry of Rock Valley and two brothers in Holland. Preceded in death by husband Wilte in April 1952. Pallbearers listed. Porter Funeral Home in charge.
Word comes of the death of Alberta Cummings in Chicago on Tuesday March 9. Services will be held at St Marys Church Rock Valley Saturday March 13 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev R W Rein hart presiding. A full obituary appears next week in the Bee.
Funeral services for Mrs Spencer (Rowena) Roorda, 69, of Sheldon were held at 1 30 pm Tuesday from the Christian Reformed church. Burial followed at East Lawn Cemetery. She was born December 6, 1895, at Orange City and married Spencer Roorda on July 31, 1919 in Canton, South Dakota, living in Sheldon 36 years. Survivors include the widow er, a daughter Noreen Bek of Sioux City, a brother William Wynna of Rock Valley and three grandchildren.
Miss Maria Elizabeth Anker, licensed practical nurse, is added to the Valley Manor Nursing and Convalescent Home roster in Rock Valley. She brings the payroll to 17 staff, trained at Princeton Hospital New Jersey, with three years practical nursing experience. The home now houses 43 residents and has others on a waiting list. A. Le Porter, manager, announced this week.
