A speaker laments growing government and corporate regulation and the decline of individualism. He criticizes anti-regulation programs and conformity enforced by tests and supervision, recalling baseball as a symbol of free, unscripted play and warning against a future of overbearing control.
Local students Helen Van Zanten and Paul Poppen earn Dean's List honors at Central College Pella. Helen a junior from Rock Valley majors in English Paul a freshman from Rock Valley is the son of Rev and Mrs Henry B Poppen both achieved a 4.25+ GPA with at least 15 credit hours.
Dick Mulder son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Mulder attended a national capital forum on Viet Nam titled a Medical Challenge. Representing the University of South Dakota College of Medicine he is a sophomore in the medical school. The meeting ended with a reception in the Thomas Jefferson diplomatic room at the State Department.
Glenda Dykstra, a Stewart's School of Hairstyling student in Sioux Falls, ranked fourth among 80 juniors in a recent hair styling contest. She received one of three special honor trophies and has held the highest class grade rating for three months. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gerrit Dykstra of rural Rock Valley and a 1965 Rock Valley graduate.
Clarence Kooima of Rock Valley and Robert Den Hartog of Sheldon were elected to three year terms on the Sheldon Credit Production Association board at the 32nd annual meeting Tuesday marching 1966. Ed Ver Meer and John Boerhave were succeeded as directors as business reports showed over 15 million dollars in loans dispersed in 1965 and loans outstanding near 68 million. Over 350 farmers attended the session.
Voters in Lyon O'Brien Osceola and Sioux counties will elect a Northwest Vocational School board April 20. Nominations close twenty days before the election at the county superintendent of schools office. Directors are chosen from seven districts by district voters. Polls run noon to 7 p.m. with central or single rural locations noted for each district.
Mr and Mrs John Van Hol land announce the birth of their son Gaylon Jay on February 27.
The Rock Valley Community School concert band joined the county band fest at Sioux Center last Wednesday. An honor band of 116 members, chosen by school directors, played four selections, then a massed band of 435 high school players performed five pieces led by Mr. Snider of the University of Nebraska, professor of music theory and director of the Cornhusker Marching Band.
A vocal recital will be held Monday evening March 14 at 7 45 p m in the Rock Valley Community School auditorium under Loren Pinkerman. Students will be judged by Frank N Summerside of Westmar College Le Mars with a later summer choir contest at Lake Park offering nine girls and six or seven boys from the local school a chance to advance.
Senior class members held auditions last Monday evening and rehearsals are underway for Finders Creepers a comedy mystery directed by Loren Pinkerman scheduled for Friday March 15 at the school.
Mary Nelson and Dennis Hamann depart with 84 Methodist youth from the Sioux City district for a several day trip through the eastern states. In New York City they will visit the United Nations and hear talks on Disarmament and Human Rights. In Washington they plan to interview Senator Bourke Hickenlooper. Mary is the Nelsons’ daughter and Dennis is the Hamanns’ son.
G H Harmelink will auction a 180 acre farm with machinery hay grain poultry and household goods. Sale starts 1 60 pm sharp. Mrs Tom Mulder reports sighting a Tobin. spring may be near.
