Bent's Fort and the first settlement on the plains
Historian George Bird Grinnell notes Bent's Fort as the first permanent settlement on the plains, built in 1828 by William Bent Charles Bent and Ceran St Vrain. The adobe fortress, 180 by 188 feet with towers and a telescope, stood on the Arkansas near the Furuytary river, witnessing Donahue and Kearney expeditions and the Santa Fe trade. The fort declined after fur trading waned, was bombed in 1852, and later rebuilt as Fort Fauntleroy Fort Wise and then Fort Lyon, while Pueblo grew nearby.
