The Bee reruns a plea urging donations at Heng Memorial Hospital after a recent case failed to secure needed blood. It notes blood transfusions save lives and asks individuals to donate, type blood, and join the donor list at Hogg Memorial Hospital during 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Mr and Mrs Owen Manning attend the 17th annual Felco Lakes Conference at Vacation Village Lake Okoboji with their family. The three day event features noted speakers and workshops for cooperative managers while Felco supplies farm commodities to over 600 local cooperatives in Iowa Minnesota Nebraska South Dakota and Illinois.
The American National Red Cross Aquatic School began June 9 at Lutheran Lakeside Camp near Spirit Lake with 150 students from eight states. Rock Valley entrants Steve Timmmer and Larry Vugtéveen will teach locally after completing the program. The course covers swimming, life saving, first aid, teaching methods, and leadership. Staff comes from colleges, public schools, and Red Cross chapters across the Midwest. In a separate item, Farmers Lumber Company held its annual meeting June 17 in the VFW Hall electing three directors for three years, declaring dividends. board members include Stanley McKeegan, Tom McGill, Ted Dykstra, and others, with Alain Miller as manager.
The Rock Valley F F A chapter and Rock Valley Industrial Arts Club schedule their regular meeting for Monday June 24 at 7 15 PM in the high school Vo Ag Dept. Members are invited and encouraged to attend with softball recreation before the meeting and lunch served.
Gene Buckley of Rock Valley attends Virginia Tech for the Secondary Science Training Program in Engineering Science this week from Sunday June 16 to July. Thirty rising high school seniors join the conference, studying energy conversion and thermodynamics, with classes labs and work under mechanical engineering faculty.
Firemen were called to the Kooima Machine Shop Monday forenoon at 11 00 where sparks from a welder ignited scrap iron shavings. Fire chief John C Dykstra reported no damage to the building.
Warren Schar manager of Northwestern Bell operations in northwest Iowa was honored at a Cedar Cabin dinner in Ashton. About 60 colleagues from across the Beel system attended along with his wife and children Sgt Curtis Schar on leave and Madion. Elgin Akra of Tacoma and sisters Mrs Schar and Mrs Akra were present. Tom Edwards Sioux City district plant superintendent presented a service pin with eight stars and a diamond. Schar began with Northwestern Bell as a youth and has served across western Iowa including Hull and Rock Rapids.
Paul Klein, a University of Iowa College of Engineering senior next year, is among seven students inducted into the Iowa chapter of Chi Epsilon, the honorary civil engineering fraternity. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Art Klein.
Members of the American Legion and Auxiliary enjoyed a potluck supper at Rock Valley Park on Tuesday evening June 11. Hostess was Mrs. Erna Schoeler Mann. Tom Wytia gave a report on Boy's State which he attended recently.
The General Synod of the Reformed Church in America meets in Ann Arbor on June 7 1968 to set Sunday June 30 as a Day of Prayer for Peace in Vietnam. It urges fasting and sacrificial offerings for civilian war victims and calls congregations to spiritual ministry for armed forces youth. It supports conscientious objectors and explains church stance to members and communities. The resolution also mourns Senator Robert Kennedy's death by violence and urges lawful participation in social change.
Marjorie Van Berkum owner of Marge's Beauty Nook at 115 9th Ave is named this week's businesswoman. Born in Ireton she has deep local ties and a growing team of two operators at her Rock Valley salon.

Mrs. Dale Bakker 23 of Kanawha dies Thursday in Sioux City after delivering twin daughters at Hogg Memorial Hospital. The mother required blood and transfers to St. Joseph's Hospital for intensive care where she passed away on June 13. Funeral services were held June 17 at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Kanawha clergy officiating.
Michael Keegan son of Mr and Mrs Clarence J Keegan made the Academic Honors list for the Spring Term at St John’s University Collegeville Minn He is a sophomore major with a 343 GPA This list recognizes superior achievement The university hosts 1500 undergrads and grads with Benedictine and lay faculty and shares classes with the College of St Benedict.
Mary Riessen of Rock Valley has been selected as one of 20 nationwide to train high school and college cheerleaders for the United States Cheerleaders Association. The sophomore at Morningside College earned her spot through Chicago tryouts and interviews and will teach at camps in Hartland Michigan Silver Bay Minnesota and Williams Bay Wisconsin all summer.
