Fewer Cattle on Corn Belt Feedlots Amid Shifts in Western States
Movements of cattle into feedlots slow in Iowa and other Corn Belt states with a 10 percent May 1 decline in Iowa and a 7 percent drop in Nebraska. Texas rises 37 percent while California, Colorado, and Arizona see 9 to 23 percent increases. Experts expect price realignments to restore balance as feeder and finished cattle economics adjust, with corn prices influencing demand. Pine sawfly threatens Iowa pine trees this spring, potentially defoliating trees before June. Larvae are dark with grayish green bodies, feeding in Waterloo and Moravia specimens. A humorous note ends the clipping about a panhandler asking for a dime for a sandwich.
