Businessman of the Week James Westra of Jim's Barber Shop

James Peter Westra, born February 4 1943, is featured as this week’s businessman of the week. He trained in Hull and Sheldon, then moved to Rock Valley in 1966 to open Jim's Barber Shop and offers men and boys haircuts with grooming products. He is married to Santa Sandbule with three children and serves as a church member, Sunday school teacher, and local club leader.

No injuries in two car accident in Rock Valley

Rock Valley police report no injuries after a two car crash Tuesday night. Grace Teunissen, westbound on 15th, signaled to enter a driveway and was sideswiped by Wesley Huisman who tried to pass. Damages were about 200 dollars to Huisman’s 1966 Chevrolet and 75 to Teunissen’s 1965 Ford. Huisman received a summons for failure to stop in assured clear distance.

Landhuis Gets Letter on Death Of Sister-in-law

John C. Landhuis of 1417 Lith St received a black edged letter from brother Johanné of Holland announcing the death of his sister-in-law Cornelia Zandwyk Landhuis. She died February 14 at age 68 after a long illness. funeral services were held February 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Ned. Herv Kerk Reformed Church in Vriezenveen, Holland.

De Koster to Attend Commercial Club Meeting

Advance Payments Available To Farm Program Signers

Wheat and feed grain producers enrolling in the 1969 programs may receive half of their estimated diversion payment in advance. John B. Crazyer, chairman, said ASCS computes advance amounts based on signup intentions and forwards payments as soon as possible. Signup began February 3 and runs to March 2, with all wheat and feed grain producers eligible for advance storage payments. special provisions apply to small feed grain bases and potential lease adjustments to 25 acres for diverted payments.

Fire Control Technician Van Berlam Visits Acapulco Aboard Saint Paul

Seaman Atlyn C. Van Berlam USN son of Mr and Mrs Jamies Van Berkam from Rock Valley visited Acapulco during the heavy cruiser USS Saint Pauls five day port call. Crewmembers enjoyed deep sea fishing skin-diving water skiing and parachute rides plus tours of La Quebrada high divers and the Flying Indians of Papantla. Saint Pauls stop served as a break before deployment preparations for spring.

Terpstras Attend Minn Convention of Coast to Coast Stores

Mr and Mrs Agner Terpstra owners of Coast to Coast Store Rock Valley returned from the 48th Annual Storeowners Convention held February 17 to 19 at the Leamington Hotel Minneapolis. Over 2300 attendees from 24 states studied modern retailing, Spring and Summer lines, and customer service with CCU University diplomas awarded to each participant. President W E Williams reviewed 1968 sales and urged growth in 1969 through service advertising merchandise and knowledge.

ISU to Award $100 to Genée Buckley and 213 Others

Gene J Buckley is among 214 outstanding high school students who will be admitted with recognition and award at Iowa State University Ames next fall. Steve Timmer to Tour with ISU Symphony Band in Missouri and Iowa

Steve Timmer son of Mr and Mrs George Timmer will join the 80 member Iowa State University Symphony Band on its spring tour through 10 communities in Missouri Illinois southeast and southwest Iowa. Under director Acton Ostling Jr the group will perform works by Mohaupt Gould Copland Nixon Bach Gershwin Sousa Krance and a Mame medley. The band represents 45 Iowa communities and ten states and performs on campus and at convocations.

Peace Lutheran appoints new officers and supports exchange program

Peace Lutheran Church in Plato Township and the American Lutheran Church men’s group held a meeting on February 12 to install new officers Marvin Moun president Emil Lange vice president and Winterfeld secretary treasurer with Rev Ray Boyen leading a discussion on law and order. The group voted to aid a foreign exchange student program in Rock Valley and Sioux Center Community Schools.

Harlan Van't Hul Returned to Iowa City for Eye Care

Harlan Van't Hul, who has been studying braille in Des Moines, returned to Iowa City for medical treatment to relieve eye pressure and improve vision. He was blinded in a fertilizer accident nearly three years ago. Mrs. Van't Hul accompanies him, and he is expected to convalesce at home before returning to Iowa City.

Rock Valley reported a total gross sales of 4 284 911 during the second quarter of 1868 while Sioux Center led with 6 900 408 in gross sales. County figures show Hawarden to Rock Valley and Orange City as other top towns with counts for merchandise and services and separate retail tax totals.

2 Vehicle Accident On Highway 18

The Rock Valley police reported a two car crash Saturday forenoon on Highway 18. Delmar Van Maanen slowed to make a left turn, Mrs. Wynia stopped, and Norman Van Voorst attempted to pass, causing damage to Van Voorst’s 1967 Ford and Van Maanen’s 1954 pickup. No injuries were reported and Van Voorst was ticketed for improper passing in city limits. Behind the Iron Curtain, juvenile delinquents in care are known as Hittle red riding hoods.
