A 100 member reciprocal trade committee of prominent Republicans in Boston calls on GOP voters to back a platform plank for the state convention. They demand that hides coal iron lumber and wood pulp be placed on the free list and that duties on manufactured goods be reduced where higher than needed for protection.
Two dead and about twenty injured when an eastbound passenger train sideswiped a grit engine west of Kimmel Indiana. Victims include Engineer Stephen Snyder Garrett Indiana and Baggageman Frank Smootz Chicago Junction Ohio. An unknown man believed to be a tramp was found dead under wreckage. Hospitalized were R O Daily Dixon Illinois George B Henkle Welsh Run Pennsylvania and Mrs Louise Macholz from Iowa with serious head cuts.
Samuel Elgin, a wealthy butter-maker and creamery owner in northwestern Illinois, was arrested on a state warrant for setting fire to and destroying his creamery near Polo on July 28. He claims innocence and says he was in Chicago that night. He waived examination and was bound over to the Ogle county grand jury.
The Tampico Dingley Star route from Tampico to Dingley via Yorktown was ended by the postal department. The 30 mile line had operated over 45 years. Yorktown and Dingley will now receive mail by rural routes.
The Tri City Railway outlines next year plans for the Watch Tower resort. Expansions include increased visitor accommodations and possible new grounds to ease Sundays and holiday crowds. A looped car line would drop passengers at the hilltop instead of the base.

Berlin reports two families named Kosciusko from Gressen plan to sue the United States for 4.2 billion marks claiming descent from the Polish hero honored for aiding the American War of Independence. They say a land grant once presented to Kosciusko by the U.S. government now belongs to them as heirs. A lawyer will file the claim soon.
In Pinconning Michigan on September 16 a boiler explosion at Jennings Stave mills killed five men Richard Gufford Burt Bell Charles Easterman William Atlin and Elijah Peters and injured eight to ten others including two seriously. the mill was destroyed. In Avon Connecticut seven people died and several were fatally injured when a fuse exploded at Climax Fuse company triggering a fire that destroyed the plant and scorched the victims bodies. property loss estimated at $100000.
W C Albers, an American once based in Moline, was arrested by Nicaraguan authorities after resisting service of a writ and insulting the Central American president. His case led to the canceling of Minister Barry exequatur and sparked Washington official agitation. Albers’ associate T A Kelso, also from Moline, joined Port Simon venture and did not return home. Kelso’s wife Mrs Kelso obtained a divorce about a year ago.
The Central Presbyterian church hosted a welcome reception for Rev. Marion Humphreys and his wife. Clergy from other denominations attended as ladies decorated the lecture room with goldenrod and cosmos. Toasts celebrated church work, Sunday school growth, missionary activities, prayer meetings, and the Ladies' Aid Society. An evening of social hour and an orchestral supper followed, leaving the pastor encouraged by congregational support and a hopeful outlook for future church growth.
