Witnesses ordered to produce books before a federal grand jury informed the court they had cabled John H. Parks secretary of the Manila and Fiber Paper Manufacturers association now in Europe. Springfield May 2 The secretary of state issued a license to incorporate Myers Optical Company of Rock Island with capital stock of 5 000 to deal in optical goods and merchandise. Incorporators are O M Myers M V Myers and M E Goodell.
In New York on May 2 Mrs Grover Cleveland issued a statement denying any decline in his health and asserting there has been no change for the worse in his condition. In Atlantic City on May 2 a collision between an electric Pennsylvania Railroad train and a car at Mays Landing left one dead and two injured, including Joseph Bailey of Camden who was killed and his wife lightly hurt.
Woodworkers in about 15 000 shipbuilding men were locked out as masters close yards until the northeast coast strikers accept terms. Across Scotland and Glasgow 6 000 woodworkers were locked out, with wage reductions at stake, affecting not less than 260 000 workers overall.

Rome May 2 One of the great difficulties in the way of marriage between Prince Helie de Sagan and Mme Anna Gould is the Catholic church has not recommended a divorce and has refused to annul Mrs Goulds first marriage. The prince is determined to marry Mme Gould and to this end he has decided to turn Protestant.
Ward McCord and Frank Magnolia tried to reach Turpin as a terrier attacked them. They pulled Turpin from the canal, he returned to the water, and after two rescues he made a third suicide attempt. The dog chased pursuers and a policeman shot at the animal to drive it away.
The Davenport Apollo Club announces Madame Johanna Gadski will headline its May festival with a May 12 concert in Burtis Opera House under Ernst Otto. Chicago soloists Mrs. Lucile Tewksbury and Garnett Hedge join the program with a Haydn Creation performance and a May 13 recital by Madame Gadski with Frank La Forge at the piano. The event showcases Wagnerian soprano Gadski in a multi-part program and includes Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin works with Chicago artists. J. W. Maxwell, founder of Maxwell, Iowa, dies at 73 after a fall at the Kirkwood hotel.

Steelton PA man Henry P. Turpin age about 32 tried twice to kill himself with a bulldog as his companion. After an all night drinking bout he and his dog went to the old Pennsylvania canal at dawn and Turpin drowned himself. A brief note indicates he spent the night drinking before the fatal act.

Chester Saxby of Moline high school won first place at a district oratorical contest in Dixon earning the district’s representative spot at the state meet at the University of Illinois in two weeks. Aurora took second. both districts will send reps.
William Haverkamp aged 13 died after being struck on the head by a pop bottle thrown from the bleachers during a ball game. Edward Parks is under arrest on charges related to the incident.
