In Indianapolis 46 defendants face demurrers to indictments in a grand dynamite conspiracy case. Eight of 54 were absent as hearings began with crowded courtrooms and involvement from labor and employer groups. The defense contends offenses were multifold. the judge rules the charge clear and the motion to quash overruled.
Mineola L I March 12 Colonel Roosevelt drawn as juror in the damage suit of Michael Carmody against the New York Central railroad was peremptorily challenged by plaintiff counsel John J. Graham and excused. Carmody previously had two legs amputated and the appellate division ordered a new trial. Roosevelt said he would serve but questioned why he should sit on a jury when others could benefit more.

Milwaukee March 12 Part of passenger train No 22 on the St Paul road en route from Milwaukee to Chicago derailed ten miles south of Milwaukee. Fifteen injured some fatally but no one killed outright according to a railroad official.
William J. Bryan addressed the Ohio constitutional convention advocating initiative referendum and recall as evolving tools. He argued recall differs from impeachment by placing decisions in the people’s hands and pressed for protections for women and children and limits on child labor while condemning industrial neglect.
In a circuit court session, the case of Stein, Hirech & Co. versus Charles B. Gundberg was halted after the defendant’s death by suicide within the last year. The plaintiff sought to substitute the estate as defendant and the matter was set over pending disposition. Three cases were heard, two dismissed or continued, leaving Henry Dismer versus Rock Island Cotton and Mattress Co. over wages of $200 for trial.
In Chicago Judge Honore’s court Mrs Louise Vermilya faced a preliminary hearing on murder charges linked to William T Smith who stayed at her Twenty Ninth street flat. A grand jury later indicted her for Smith’s murder while charges related to Arthur T Bissonette were dropped for lack of proof.
Senator Leroy Percy of Mississippi faced pressure after vowing to resign if he lost in the party primary. Commercial fishermen reported 2,002,410 pounds of catch valued at 53,744, an uptick of 203,315 pounds and 15,273 over 1810, with increases in whitefish and lake trout. Lake Michigan yields 9,466,092 pounds sold for 609,091, while Green Bay and Lake Superior totals push 15,380,000 pounds worth 743,845. inland catches are not included.
Chicago March 12 Judge Carpenter denied a defense motion to take the Packers case from the jury and discharge the defendants.
Several bills to curb patentees power over unpatented parts used in operating patented machines gained momentum in Congress today. The measures aim to curb monopolistic control and remedy abuses in patent law as lawmakers debate the issue.
Chicago report notes Lewis Weilstitch of Kansas City set a world record with a 280 single game in doubles at the American bowling tournament. Leading two man teams include Bruck and Fisher 1191, Makepeace and Weisnger 1130, Hutter and Anderson 1130, Nichols and Wehlstitch 1117, Lang and Lorenz 1077.
In Washington on March 12 Gompers Mitchell and Morrison federal labor officials were intensely criticized by Attorney J J Darlington in a District of Columbia court proceeding. He condemned their alleged actions and framed the case as a sharp rebuke to labor leadership.
Wisconsin statistics from the game warden department show a sharp rise in commercial fishing for 1911. Lake Michigan and Superior yields total 2 002 410 pounds, surpassing 1910 by about 2 500 000, with Madison reporting March 12.
Washington reports that after a meeting with President Taft Senator Crane Director McKinley and Secretary Hilles the Taft bureau will stop using personalities against Roosevelt. Taft reportedly urged abandoning such attacks. Also in Washington a customs appeals court rules an importer may appeal a duty assessment if viewed as too low.
Nearly one hundred witnesses attended as the sugar case resumed and the government prepared to present evidence. U S District Attorney Wise called it extraordinary and said the defendants violated a law handed down by Hod to Moses, base of the Sherman law, and they had held 75 percent of the sugar industry for twenty years.
General Castro addressed veterans in Camaguey promising Cuba would fight as against Spain if the United States intervenes. The assembly adopted a resolution demanding an investigation into wealth sources of all administration members including the president.
Chicago March 12 A three year unemployed man Adolph Gerlink 21 and his fiancée Frances Soucek 18 chose death by gas after a failed bid to start a home together. They spent their last dollar on a dance and supper then returned to Gerlink’s sister’s home to die in each other’s arms. Gerlink had saved for a house but drained funds paying board. Soucek worked as a maid on West Eighteenth Street and contributed little to the fund.
New York March 12 The Commercial Travelers National league led by P E Dowe targets abolishing tipping in hotels. Plans call for a fund to control and operate 100 tipless hotels with salesmen urged to invest and hostelry owners to join a blacklist system to pressure noncooperating hotels.
The March 12 dispatch reports 2,000,000 idle workers in England and 175,000 striking in Germany with clashes between police and strikers near Ham bor. In France miners protest pension reform while US operators reject pay demands. Premier Asquith chairs London talks as White arrives in New York to lead negotiations.
A delegation of 200 women left New York for Albany to urge legislators to favor an equal suffrage amendment. In Kansas, the Kansas Equal Suffrage association began a house to house canvass of men and women to learn their beliefs on women suffrage.
The report notes an actress connected to Mrs. John Jacob Astor’s circle vanishing while traveling with an English actor who has appeared in New York productions. They are believed en route to Europe.
