Beveridge Talks in Senate for Larger Tobacco Packages

In Washington on June 24 Senator Beveridge spoke at length in the senate in support of amending tobacco package sizes in force since the Spanish American War tax. He argued reducing the tax by increasing package size would benefit the government and limit United States revenue loss. The measure seeks to redirect funds by raising more than 21 million dollars in revenue while correcting eight years of benefit to consumers. The day’s session also included discussion of tariffs and free raw materials, with Senator Bailey defending protection for hides and leather goods and criticizing universal free raw material theories.

Corporations tax will not take burden from consumer

Washington June 22 Aldrich Taft amendment to tax net earnings of corporations would not lessen consumer burden nor reduce tariff rates. Democrats push for income tax arguing wealth should pay its fair share. Treasury deficit figures, growing government spending, and comparisons show expenditures doubling since 1890s. Taft's stance stirs opposition from Roosevelt followers who claim Wall Street influences control the administration.
