Washington June 23 The senate began voting on the lumber schedule as soon as a quorum was procured. McCumbers amendment to set a one dollar per thousand rate on sawed lumber failed 44 to 24. the main proposal to set 1.50 per thousand with finished lumber differentials passed 50 to 28.
An earthquake struck Grass Valley at 11:25 PM, the severest in years, with a lighter aftershock at 11:49 PM. Reports reached to Marysville Nevada City Chico and Colfax. no damage reported. A separate quake in Reno at 11:26 PM was felt with no damage noted.
Denver reports Father Joseph P. Carrigan of St. Patrick's Catholic church found guilty of insubordination contumacy and irreverence in a trial. The verdict strips him of sacred prerogatives until penance in a monastery, deepening the quarrel with Bishop Matz. Papers await papal approval.
Miss Maude Adams presented Schiller's Maid of Orleans beneath the stars at Harvard stadium in Cambridge. About 2,000 in the company and the Frohman syndicate produced the show for Germania museum of Harvard. More than 15,000 spectators viewed the performance from tiered seating.
Eight gangs will be put to work between Edwards river and Monmouth on the Rock Island Southern by week’s end. In Saint Tropez Count Kills Tar mutiny on Count Obemuller's yacht. the crew attacked with revolvers, shots fired in self defense, a sailor killed, mutineers arrested.
A mine of the Lackawanna Coal and Coke company at Wehrum Indiana county exploded today. Between 100 and 150 miners were inside with three bodies recovered by 10 45 AM. Ten injured men surfaced, six fatally. By noon three dead and 25 seriously hurt were confirmed, with fears 65 miners still inside. The mine was burning and black damp hindered rescue efforts.
Reports say Leon Ling, accused in Elsie Sigel's death, was taken into custody at Windber near Johnstown. Chung Sin testified under pressure about the crime while denying direct complicity and facing a $10,000 bail as an inquest looms.
Paris reports a parliamentary commission's scathing finding on France’s naval administration over a decade. It details inflated costs, mismanaged construction, outdated gun models, lacking dry docks, and scarce coal and ammunition. It calls for total reorganization, removal of red tape, and a separate construction department from the general staff.

Cincinnati June 23 Thousands of German American Turners arrived for the 30th meeting of the North American Gymnastic Union with bands playing Die Wacht am Rhein and The Star Spangled Banner. Special trains reached Carthage fair grounds and the Turners were guided to tent city quarters at Festplatz. Formal opening tonight features Robert Nix Indianapolis president of the union, with remarks by local officials. President Taft sends regrets for attendance.
In broad daylight a well dressed stranger robbed the Waggoner Bank and Trust in downtown Fort Worth, taking $8,100 in currency while cashier Walter E. King was alone. He fled amid crowds but police later found no trace as witnesses noted a bland manner and possible car pickup.
In Fairmont West Virginia on June 23 a woman died and her husband, about 50, was gravely ill from a nauseating illness. Authorities found Mr and Mrs Thomas MacNamara in their home bath tub. MacNamara too sick to explain. Neighbors had last seen them Sunday night prompting an investigation. Police reported them fully undressed in the tub.
Yesterday in Congress the Senate, 46 to 30, removed hides from the free list and imposed a 15 percent ad valorem duty, matching the Dingley act. Senator Aldrich announced the finance committee’s new lumber schedule and linoleum amendments, proposing sawed lumber at 1.50 per thousand, a 50 cent rise, but no action on lumber or linoleum. The House activity was not in session.
A boat carrying nine tourists presumed American and four boatmen capsized on Lower Killarney lake near Killarney Ireland on June 23. Nine tourists and two boatmen were drowned leaving the polo match between Meadowbrook Polo Team and an English team as the day’s other headline.
In Spring Valley on June 23 a riot in Cherry, a mining town on the St. Paul railway, left one man dead and two others gravely wounded after town marshal Steve Timko tried to quell the disturbance. He fired his revolver in self defense during the attack by five miners, killing John Gaspar and wounding Joe Zekucra and Rich ard Velutini. The feud, between Slavs and Italians over local offices, had flared for months. The coroner’s jury exonerated Timko, ruling the shooting was in self defense.
Reports from Manila say Lieutenant Noble and a detachment of the 23rd constabularyengaged Davao mutineers on the 18th. Sergeant Academia, alleged mutiny leader, was killed in the fight. Sergeant Hewson of American forces was wounded.
In San Francisco on June 23 Captain M. J. Conboy of the police department shot Bernard Lagan a prominent young French businessman. Lagan says the attack was unprovoked and that the officer was intoxicated.
Kankakee June 23 The jury in the case of Private Joseph B Klein charged with the murder of Earl Neb son a 16 year old Kankakee boy last August while the 1st regiment I N was enroute to the Springfield riots returned a verdict of not guilty to day.
