A man testifies he was ambushed near his home by a mob demanding he surrender land held in the name of Tobe Snoddy. The accused claim fraud and that land was obtained via a legitimate deal, with tension escalating after an assault.
Silan N. Phelps, the Monroe Bridge outlaw, was electrocuted at Charleston State Prison for killing Deputy Sheriff Emmett F. Huskina on June 2, 1910. The state declined commutation by a 7 to 1 vote. Phelps faced the chair calmly, with brief vocal silence as the 1,900 volt current cycled.
Reports from Shanghai to Manila detail renewed clashes between imperial and rebel forces south of Suchow, with unknown outcomes. Rebel expeditionary forces advance toward Peking from Wu Chang while assassinations target revolutionaries in Chang Yang. Nellie Prince known as Diamond Nell gave herself up at the Chicago detective bureau amid a Pittsburgh indictment for participation in the $45,000 January 1909 Thaw and Kaufmann home robberies. Indictments named Harry Robinson Joe Birtsch and George Bissett. Robinson is serving time at Stillwater and may be Diamond Nell's former husband. The Thaw loot reportedly contained $35,000 in jewels with no minor items missing.
Delegates to the Modere Woodmen convention were to vote on raising insurance rates. Opponents had not yet spoken but were promised a briefing before the vote. George D. Eldridge and James F. Egan favored the increase and spoke yesterday. J. L. Sundeen of Minneapolis attacked the administration and accused supporters of railroading the bill without member consent. A late afternoon vote was anticipated.
Clayton Rolland a prominent Muscatine unionist was produced in court and released on $2000 bond after being indicted on four counts for conspiracy and injury to buildings. Dr Joseph Springer described powder burns and bullet paths, saying the dead man could not have fired the shot.
Springfield plans a Roosevelt endorsement push with a Saturday conference at the Leland hotel. Francis J. Heney and Medill McCormick arrive to arrange the meeting while Walter Clyde Jones and Hugh S. Magill attend. The Sangamon county Roosevelt club boldens support with a large gathering and new officers. Stubbs and Hadley join the Roosevelt national committee as Iowa Taft delegates pledge backing.
