Washington January 21 members of the House applauded when Representative Champ Clark of Missouri declared the Democratic party intends to nominate William J. Bryan for president at the Denver convention in July. Some Republicans joined in the handclapping.
In Dothan Alabama on January 21 Cleveland Franklin a Black man who had struck an officer was fatally harmed by a mob while alive the next day reports indicate. The incident follows a confrontation that drew attention to actions against Franklin and raises questions about mob violence and local law response.

Iowa officers shut the gambling houses in Council Bluffs on January 23 following a joint county and city action and a sensational Sunday speech by Webb H. Byers the attorney general. He condemned the local authorities for allowing the dens to stay open to preserve about twelve thousand dollars a year in fines.
Philadelphia Jan 21 The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held the state 2 cent railroad fare law unconstitutional declaring the act void as unreasonable and confiscatory. The measure passed both houses by nearly unanimous vote in the last legislature.
