A heavy snow storm develops in the idle west and will move into the central east and mid Atlantic regions today. It is expected to disrupt railway and traffic conditions from the central west to the Northeast, with heavy accumulations noted in the central west and northern valleys.
Congress debates remedies for rising living costs with a concurrent resolution for a joint committee to study conditions. House actions include Mann’s bill on interstate commerce reform and a ship subsidy proposal by Humphrey, while Senate honors Senator McLaurin and House members urge tighter appropriations.

The U S Supreme Court had sentenced them to 60 days for failing to stop the lynching of Ed Johnson whose execution was stayed. The sentence was shortened by 10 days for good behavior. former Sheriff Shipp and two others remain jailed and will be released January 28.
Cairo Ill Jan 4 Governor Deneen removed Sheriff Frank E Davis. A petition for quo warranto was granted in circuit court by Judge Butler to test constitutionality. The October grand jury revisited the Pelley murder lynching and police graft as new business emerged.
New York January 4 The Loeb collectorship reports reveal customs receipts on passengers baggage for 1909 rose sharply, nearly doubling the combined totals of 1906 and 1907, even as 1907 remained port history’s peak year.
James R. Kaye a former Lincoln Indiana clergyman and Oak Park religious paper editor must serve two years in Fort Leavenworth after the U S circuit court of appeals upheld the lower court's counterfeit conviction.
Washington will forward Cook polar data to the National Geographic Society for examination. A Copenhagen shipment arrived late December, with a committee to report soon. President Willis L. Moore declines reelection after long service amid polar controversy. Cook’s original data now in Denmark, Dr. Cook critically ill in Europe, Mrs. Cook at his bedside as Danish scientists dispute his polar claim.
A Washington dispatch reports Republican insurgents in the house are told the administration will withhold their patronage quota and step up discipline of so called recalcitrants. It adds claims of postmaster appointment snubs and etapas of funds spent in Wisconsin and Minnesota districts to back rival candidates.
Darius Ogden Mills, 84, noted financier and philanthropist, father of Mrs. Whitelaw Reid, died last night at his winter home near San Francisco of heart disease. Only child Mrs. Reid at bedside. son Ogden Mills and wife en route to New York. Ambassador Reid plans to return for the funeral.
New York January 4 Oscar Murray president of the Baltimore and Ohio today resigned. Daniel Williard vice president of the Burlington railroad was elected as Murray's successor.
Washington January 4 negotiations continue between north western railroads and striking switch men with no definite action and neither side showing a willingness to yield.
Feverish money market activity in New York pushed call loan rates between 6 and 9 percent. Opening bids started near 6 to 7 percent, rose to 9 percent, then receded to 6 percent after early demand was met, with the day closing around 8 percent.
Chicago January 4 An unidentified man linked to Otto Olson, held on a page arrest for Norwood Park post office robbery, was shot and killed by police as he tried to flee a house surrounded by officers. This marks the third alleged robber killed since January 1. Canned Pears Kill Four in Sawtell Colorado.
Springfield January 4 Special House actions move toward rapid primary law passage. Three new primary election bills are introduced including the Cook county Republican committee measure with delegate system. A petition nomination bill by Senator McConnell wipes out party circles. A Murray Cook county bill mirrors the Oglesby plan with unconstitutional features removed. A rescue station bill seeks 75000 for stations at Springfield Ottawa and Marion with oxygen and rescue equipment.

Confesses Murder by Three Wheeling January 4 Joseph Vastelo a convict at Moundsville penitentiary confesses that he and two others killed Samuel T Ferguson a wealthy contractor near Washington Pennsylvania on September 25 1903.
Leon DeLagrange, famed French aeronaut, died during a flight in Bordeaux today. Separately, the battleship Michigan was placed in commission at Philadelphia’s yard, commanded by Captain N. R. Usher.
A Milwaukee fire at the American Bridge company plant killed four firemen buried by a collapsing wall. Capt John J Hennessey Lieut Dominic O Donnell William Foley and Joseph Sullivan died. The blaze caused about 260000 in losses and frostbitten injuries were reported among rescuers.
President Taft plans to divide his inter state commerce and anti trust proposals into two separate messages. Rail presidents reported the changes after a White House meeting, with the trusts section slated for Thursday noon and the commerce section deferred to Friday. A conservation message worth 30 million for reclamation projects is also planned.
John D Rockefeller Jr to chair a New York grand jury examining the white slave traffic. The district attorney spearheads the inquiry into traffic in women with aims of strict prosecutions. Prominent city figures reportedly back the investigation and pledge support.
In Kewanee Illinois a man named Elias Nicola files for divorce from A H Mansor claiming Mansor sold his daughter to him for 300 dollars to pay medical bills. The girl, sent from Europe, appears to be 13 or 14 though claimed 16. They married but did not live together. she now seeks the annulment, saying she did not know she was being married. Both reside in Kewanee.
Joliet council last night adopted an ordinance providing for a high necnball fire protection system to be installed at an estimated cost of 110,000. The move, long debated, is expected to reduce fire insurance rates and improve municipal safety.
President Taft endorses a plan to raise the battleship Maine from Havana harbor to inter the sailors who perished. He told Representative Loud of Michigan he wished to see the appropriations bill and said he would support the effort to fund the expedition.
