Washington February 25 The senate committee on naval affairs began an inquiry into charges against the American navy and the department amid questions about the administrative reorganization and faulty construction of battleships raised by a magazine article. No definite scope was announced.
Washington reports a new candidate offered to enter the Florida monitor turret during shelling from Arkansas as part of a navy program. Officials say the offer is commendable but no demon beings will be placed in the turret during firing, and address details are undisclosed. Jake, a husband with two children, seeks only a two week enlistment if chosen.
In Portsmouth on February 20 physicians examined the body of George A. Carkins of Newington to test claims by his sister Mrs. E Roy known as Glueia Calla that her husband killed him during a barrel incident. Two bullet wounds were found in Carkins back indicating a shot from behind while he lay on the floor after a head wound.
Guthrie Oklahoma February 25 Governor Haskell ordered Attorney General West to file suit to dissolve an alleged merger between the Rock Island and the St Louis and San Francisco railroads in Oklahoma The demand calls for both systems to remain distinct and separate and West said the suit would begin immediately.
In New York on February 25 Justice Guy set aside a jury verdict against the City Railway company over a child death. The jurors were fined 50 dollars each for deciding by a flip of a coin, after the verdict favored the railway company in the damages suit.
Pittsburg reports indicate a heated legal battle looms in the Hartje conspiracy suit against August Hartje John L Welshons and Clifford Howe with disclosures emerging from a conference attended by Hartje Welshons and Hope and a brother in law testifying. Lisbon braces for a potential republican surge in Portugal as monarchists face a predicted violent struggle and a republican ascent amid public indifference.
Harrisburg Feb 25 The state presses cross examination in the capitol conspiracy trial. Ex-Auditor General Snyder first defendant on the stand says he did not know the HOI contract was awarded to John H. Sanderson and that the schedule lacked quantity details. The defense probes whether Sanderson was the only bidder to file a $1000000 bond with the bid.
In Callao crowds of about 30 000 lined the harbor to inspect the American battleships after four days of display. Visitors toured the ships and some remained aboard as they circled the fleet. President Pardo visited the fleet as the third division came ashore to play on the embankment. A regatta was held and officers dined ashore.
Judge Grosscup and seven Central Illinois Traction officers faced charges of criminal negligence and manslaughter after the Aug 50 interurban collision near Charleston that killed 18. In Chicago on February 25 a wedding reception erupted into a riot between two Polish factions at Joseph Cuta’s saloon. Fifteen people, including policemen, were severely cut. four men reportedly faced fatal injuries. Bottles, chairs and tables fueled the melee following days of feud. Concurrently in New Zealand Webb retained the world sculling title by defeating R. T. Ressider on the Wanganui River.
Washington, Feb. 25. The U S supreme court upheld a state law barring employers from forcing women to work more than ten hours daily. Justice Brewer wrote that women need protections beyond those afforded to men, noting physical differences and capacity for long labor justify separate legislation to safeguard women’s welfare.
Lieutenant General Stoessel condemned to death for surrendering Port Arthur to Japan has petitioned Emperor Nicholas II for a full pardon. The appeal was filed in St. Petersburg on February 25.

In Brooklyn a lawyer was shot and seriously wounded in the head by Mrs. Jennie Bunt as he approached Sanford's office door in the Garfield building corridor. Bunt, who admitted the shooting, called it justified by Sanford's treatment of her and an act of God. Sanford had employed him in a suit against her husband.

New York, Feb 25. The Hudson river tunnel and subway system linking Hoboken with New York City officially opened as President Roosevelt pressed a Washington button to start the first New York to Hoboken train. Governors of New York and New Jersey attended along with city officials at the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western station in Hoboken where remarks and a Roosevelt letter expressing appreciation followed the ceremonies.

Lamar Missouri February 25 Lee Hart a coal hauler shot and killed Mrs Joseph Edwards his mother in law and fatally wounded her husband then killed himself by lying on a railroad track as a fast express plowed into him. Hart had fired at his wife missing only a flesh wound.
