In Lansford an August morning clash between troops and strikers left Capt. W. H. Heim slightly injured and several strikers bayonetted. Militia commander Maj. Gearhart vows to seek martial law as authorities move to quell disturbances and protect non union workers.

Washington reports steady growth in Canada's trade with Great Britain. Total imports for consumption last fiscal year reached 202,791,595 dollars, up from 181,287,985 in 1901, led by the United States with 120,809,956. Exports totaling 196,019,76 dollars rose from 177,445,489 in 1901, with the United States taking 71,196,505 and Britain exporting 109,348.
The Kalamazoo director in the Henderson Ames company, the last of the board charged with conspiracy to defraud the state in military clothing, was arraigned in Lansing. He requested a postponement, bail set at 10000 with two sureties, and the case scheduled for March 16.
Eighteen hundred workers at American Iron and Steel Manufacturing company walk out in Lebanon Indiana seeking removal of colored and non union workers and restoration of old hands. In Pittsburgh the Amalgamated Journal reports the rebate proposition from American Tin Plate Company through the conference committee was voted down.
Soldiers from Company F and K of the Twelfth regiment clashed with residents in a valley polluting the scene with curses and flying stones. Captain Gearhart was hit on the shoulder as detachments chased assailants. Several men were taken into custody including Jimmy Marteen Joseph McCann John King Timothy King and John Kelly. McCann was jailed on assault and battery breach of the peace and inciting a riot with bail set at 300. Others were released.
President Roosevelt spent a day in Newport and surrounding towns, praised by New Hampshire residents while facing crowd controls and rough reception at The Weirs. He defended the Philippines and praised Union soldiers, warning against evil that accompanies progress and outlining plans for future travel to Tennessee and the Carolinas.
The body of Orion Nathan Wartenbee, a Rock Island railroad conductor formerly of Rock Island Illinois, was found in North Fort Worth. Police suspect murder. Wartenbee lived in Fort Worth until two years ago, previously worked as a switchman on the Rock Island. He left his wife and children who now live in Chanute Kansas. He was about 87 years old.
In St. Clair Michigan on August 29 Nellie Anderson daughter of Captain and Mrs. M Anderson and Lutherford Hill faced parental intervention. Captain Anderson telegraphed to stop the match and Sheriff Maines halted the couple at the court house to secure a license in Port Huron. Both were adults and determined, but the captain arrived and persuaded her to return home to think it over. She says her heart remains with Rutherford.
Edward Wilson proprietor of the Abbey club Jacob Geis and John Holin faro dealers were arrested on complicity charges linked to Leonard Dongle teller of the Aspen bank accused of embezzling 44550. Bail set at 20000 each. Wilson claims a receipt for 15000 and a cashier’s guarantee, but the district attorney will not accept the arrangement and the men face trial.
Mattoon Aug 20 David Hartman an old soldier who disappeared from Crawford county years ago has returned to Robinson and claims his share of Dr. Wilson estate. The estate was partitioned in 1804 and his daughters were awarded his portion. They later sold 500 acres. Hartman now seeks partition to recover his inheritance after being found alive in Addy Washington.
Saratoga N Y reports John G Carlisle former secretary of the area addressed the American Bar Association. He argued the United States could acquire and govern territory as a constitutional question tied to Spain’s actions. He warned change in the constitution is unlikely and praised the Republican stance while urging diligent effort and hard work.
In Keokuk a mother used a special constable role to guard her sick 11 month old child after an attempted return under a new sociological statute. Secretary Park of the Associated Charities was jailed for contempt. habeas corpus freed him. The case tests custody procedures and leaves the public indignant at the law’s reach. The baby was later found hidden at a sister’s home amid police subpoenas and ongoing appeals through the courts.
Brainerd Minnesota reports the death of P White known to northern Minnesota Indians as Big White Feather. He was born in Whiting Vermont in 1811 and died early today at Brainerd.
A letter received by the Omaha police claims Iay Huffman aged 13 killed Dora Jackman by cutting her hair and later killed himself. The note says Huffman also killed a four month old baby after his mother died and planned to jump into the Missouri River. Police sought Huffman’s body and the unidentified infant found last June may be the referenced child.
Lawyer Edward Yates of Pittsfield, Pike County, argues the widow may claim the bodies of Christopher Leonidas and son Ellsworth, shot by Mate Breen on the steamer Dubuque. Reporters note the remains may lie in a pickling vat at the state university hospital, not yet on the dissecting table, with the City janitor saying the unclaimed bodies were sent there after the July 10 killing.
The Rock Island Cadets reorganized after the G A R encampment and now number about thirty youths. Despite regular dues and hard work, funds are insufficient to fully equip the unit. Citizens willing to support military youth are urged to help, with Capt A G Fleming and Julius Krell named as officers and Capt W H Cline to drill the company. Also reports on the American Forestry association meeting with G A Andrews, Gifford, Miller, and others presenting talks in Lansing.
Omaha August 29 leading messenger firm advertises for girls to fill messenger roles. Other companies reportedly will follow, with girls riding bicycles and few boys kept for restricted routes. Managers say the work is hard for boys to perform satisfactorily.
Washington reports Colombia will formally demand Nicaragua explain its alleged participation in the revolution against the Colombian government. Colombia will back the demand with its strongest land and naval force once rebel activity within its borders is crushed. Information came from a Washington authority.

The line will run Oct 1, 1903 between Moline and East Moline with cars 6 am to 10 pm daily, at most two hours apart from opening.
