A section of John G. Myers & Co department store in Albany collapsed during repairs, burying more than 100 workers mostly young women. Rescue efforts recovered 75 injured by 10:30, with estimates of 50 more under wreckage and a rising death toll as hospitals report three initial fatalities and later figures.
A Wall Street source who knows Grover Cleveland for two decades asserts the former president’s annual income is just over $5,000, far below the wealth expected from eight years in the White House. He disputes bond deal gains and defends Cleveland’s honesty and public service motives. Col Blunt vows to investigate vacation disputes at Rock Island arsenal, promising to grant full 15 days if law entitles, and to correct any shortfalls on request.
The case against Conrad Zuecker for abandonment by his wife Anna Zuecker was heard before Justice McFarlane with H M McCaskrin for the defense and State's Attorney Scott for the state. The hearing continued to Friday so authorities could decide if the five year old charge falls under the statute of limitations, with the state arguing the offense is continuous and not time barred.
In Waco Texas early today about 600 mounted citizens seized the jail and took Sank Majors from Sheriff Tiller jailer and deputies. After hearing his confession they hanged him from a bridge. A second item notes a San Francisco deal to merge raisin growing interests into one large corporation.

M Witte stressed determination to seek peace and awaited Japanese expectations as officials mapped a formal reception. Meanwhile a separate Indianapolis incident left four injured when a picnic steamship Sunshine sank after a crowd surged to view a canoeist.
Fire destroyed St. Thomas Episcopal Church at Fifth Avenue and Fifty third Street in New York today. The blaze was confined to the church, though nearby homes of several wealthy individuals were within a short distance.
Chicago August 8 The fate of the soft coal miners strike in Illinois depends on a joint meeting today of miners and operators. More than 1,500 mine workers are on strike in Thayer Virden Divernon and Auburn counties over a grievance connected to the shot firers bill pending in the legislature. Also Mrs Elsie Engel of Springfield Illinois appeals to Sheriff Helder to aid in locating C H Engel who disappeared July 24. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall with black hair and a smooth face, 145 pounds, wearing dark blue clothes with a black shirt.
New York reports a major blaze in Hoboken New Jersey as a fire destroyed the Delaware Lackawanna and Western terminal and spread to the Dukes House and nearby docks. Two ferries Binghamton and Hopatcong were towed away, with Hopatcong later sinking, while freight sheds burned and water front threatened. Estimated losses around 500000 with no lives reported.
A run on Denver Savings Bank began with doors closed at noon and depositors allowed to draw 10 percent. The bank, facing rumors of instability tied to bad loans, owes depositors about 2 million dollars.
Grand Secretary W. J. Spencer of the Structural Building Trades Alliance of America tours Rock Island from Dayton to assess the Electrical Workers' strike. He meets F. G. O Connell and reviews conditions as the Building Trades council meeting is delayed and a board vote on the strike is anticipated.
State's Attorney Scott took no further examination today of William Nagel and Josephine Collett, detained on murder charges in the Drury fisherman Carl Brady case. They will be tried in September. both previously served time for horse stealing at Fort Madison. Nagel was paroled early. the woman, 25, released June 20, 1904, has lived with him since.
Reports show New Orleans yellow fever cases at 569 with 115 deaths to date and 6 new cases today. Louisiana outside New Orleans reports 22 new cases and 3 deaths. Suspicious cases rise to 32 under Marine Hospital Service review as officials anticipate easing quarantine restrictions. In Illinois health certificates tighten. mosquito control orders issued as Memphis man seeks injunction to return wife and child.
The grand commandery of the colored Knights Templar in Illinois opens at Prince Hall, South Rock Island, with about 75 delegates. Mayor George W. McCaskrin gives a welcome address. A parade is planned for tomorrow, followed by an afternoon and evening picnic at Huber's garden, plus prize drills and a Chicago crack drill team.
George J Gould and Mrs Gould were returning from Saint Valery Eu Caux when their car skidded. Mrs Gould was thrown out and bruised but not seriously. The car lurched down a steep incline before being stopped by a hedge. Gould was unhurt. In another incident a woman attempted suicide by poison in a downtown block. partial ingestion occurred but a physician arrived in time to prevent a tragedy.
