Death of Carl Brady Prompts Double Accusations In Court

William Nagel and Josephine Collett are jailed in Rock Island on murder charges over Island B death of Carl Brady on May 9, 1905. Collett testified angrily, narrating a tale of theft, crime and buried remains while Nagel denied killing Brady, shifted blame, and accused Collett as the killer.

Both Held by Verdict of the Coroner s Jury

Sheriff Heider Coroner Eckhart and States Attorney Scott went to Muscatine Saturday afternoon when news arrived that the body had been found. An Argus representative accompanied officials to the island where Nagel was held by Deputy Sheriff E E Reynolds in charge of the case. The yet undisguised scene showed Brady s shanty boat off shore and the murdered man interred in a cave behind the boat. The coroner empaneled a jury and, after witnesses and Nagel s voluntary statement, the inquest began at once.

Zeigler Relief Expedition Admitted a Failure

Baltimore August 7 report: cable stating no Zeigler expedition members reached Shannon Island July 21 and much ice in the north Atlantic. The Magdalena, failing in its mission, is expected to return to Norway after reaching New York on the 20th.

Taft Party Dined with Generals and Royal Guests

Maj. Gen. Corbin hosted a Taft party dinner in Manila with Rear Admiral Enquist of the Russian navy and staff present. Corbin toasted President Roosevelt while Taft toasted the Russian emperor. Enquist was much affected. A later reception at the palace drew 3,000 attendees hosted by Gov. Wright.

Fever Embargo Moves Auditors to Rock Island

Due to a southern embargo on travel amid yellow fever fears, Southern Pine Lumber Company moves its auditing force from Hammond Louisiana to Rock Island. Fever Control Plan Aids New Orleans Effort

New Orleans reports 4 new fever cases today raising total to 527 with 3 more deaths reaching 108. Dr. White takes charge of the fever response as federal support begins. About 70,000 dollars is in hand with daily eradication costs estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 dollars.
