William Nagel and Josephine Collett are jailed in Rock Island on murder charges over Island B death of Carl Brady on May 9, 1905. Collett testified angrily, narrating a tale of theft, crime and buried remains while Nagel denied killing Brady, shifted blame, and accused Collett as the killer.
Sheriff Heider Coroner Eckhart and States Attorney Scott went to Muscatine Saturday afternoon when news arrived that the body had been found. An Argus representative accompanied officials to the island where Nagel was held by Deputy Sheriff E E Reynolds in charge of the case. The yet undisguised scene showed Brady s shanty boat off shore and the murdered man interred in a cave behind the boat. The coroner empaneled a jury and, after witnesses and Nagel s voluntary statement, the inquest began at once.
Baltimore August 7 report: cable stating no Zeigler expedition members reached Shannon Island July 21 and much ice in the north Atlantic. The Magdalena, failing in its mission, is expected to return to Norway after reaching New York on the 20th.
Maj. Gen. Corbin hosted a Taft party dinner in Manila with Rear Admiral Enquist of the Russian navy and staff present. Corbin toasted President Roosevelt while Taft toasted the Russian emperor. Enquist was much affected. A later reception at the palace drew 3,000 attendees hosted by Gov. Wright.

Due to a southern embargo on travel amid yellow fever fears, Southern Pine Lumber Company moves its auditing force from Hammond Louisiana to Rock Island. M M Cruise and J M Hubbel with families have arrived and occupy offices in the Masonic Temple beside the company’s Rock Island main office. Other auditors will join soon. the move is temporary until conditions improve in the south.
Tokio reports the disposition of Sakhalin prisoners is being considered with transfer likely to the Russian or Japanese coast under a pre arranged plan. About 40 000 Russian POWs on the island are being transported to Japan while a storm in Indiana causes over 500000 dollars in damage.
A rough outline describes the murder scene on Island B in Drury township along the Illinois shore seven miles above Muscatine and near Fairport Iowa. The island features a cabin boat site, a cave, small buildings, and brush at the upper end, with lower fields once cultivated by Brady. Nagel led officers to Geneva island to search for the body. Island B lies within Illinois jurisdiction.
Federal authorities in control at New Orleans report a tragic death near Orion, Henry county. A. H. Tiffany, 28, a C B Q brakeman from Galesburg, fell under a moving caboose wheel while attempting to board during yard work. Coroner's inquest returned accidental verdict. body sent to Galesburg for burial. survived by wife and children.
Mrs C H White sister of Mrs E J Burns narrowly escaped death in Sigourney Iowa as night clerk Wood Adams attacked her with a mineral water bottle in her room at the hotel her husband runs Adams wounded himself by slashing his throat and was captured by the sheriff Mrs White is recovering and progressing well.
About 75 delegates arrive in the city for the Colored Grand Chapter and Grand Commandery conclave. Sessions open at Prince Hall at 16 o'clock with plans for a Wednesday picnic at Hubers garden and a street parade. An early morning fire at 45 1/4 Sixth Avenue causes nominal loss. Frank G. Allen to speak at Turner Hall tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock.
New Orleans reports 4 new fever cases today raising total to 527 with 3 more deaths reaching 108. Dr. White takes charge of the fever response as federal support begins. About 70,000 dollars is in hand with daily eradication costs estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 dollars. A general cleaning drive starts with 800 workers, expanding to halt all business for cleanup on upcoming days.
M Witte visits historic Boston and Cambridge sites while the Russian plenipotentiaries sail in convoys from Newport. The Dolphin and Mayflower travel with Russian and Japanese commissioners toward Portsmouth. M Witte remains in Boston before joining the voyage.
In St Paul on August 7 the telegraphers strike shows little change as Northern Pacific and Great Northern persist that the strike is broken. The telegraphers continue the block and assert defeat of the walkout. In Washington on August 7 the father of Prof. Alexander Graham Bell, Alexander Melville Bell, has died.
