Wasps Nuisance Grows In Manitoba This Summer

Manitoba reports a severe wasp problem due to hot weather. Entomologist Dave Smith of the Department of Agriculture notes nests growing around doorsteps and cracks. He warns most wasps die after frost in two to three weeks and recommends nighttime DDT spraying to destroy nests and surrounding areas. Hornets, larger than wasps, also pose a nuisance with paper nests. control advised by spraying or knocking nests down.

Farewell at Makaroff for Departing Couple

A Monday evening farewell at Makaroff Community Hall honored Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Grundy who are moving to Chase British Columbia. About seventy friends played whist with ladies and gents high prizes won by Mrs. J. Pound and Mr. S. Bangle. A purse gift from the community was presented by Mr. B. Boyce, praising the Grundys for their long civic support. Frank and Della thanked guests and invited calls to visit them. They have resided sixty years in the area and will be missed as they begin a new life in a new home.

Roblin Girls Fastball Club Holds Meeting

A meeting was held on Tuesday September 19 with good attendance. The Roblin Girls fastball club reports earnings of 120.00 from ball tournaments this year and a 40.00 probation from the Boys club. They are raising funds by selling tickets on baseball pools.

Thirty Golfers Compete In Roblin Two Ball Mixed Tournament

Thirty golfers joined the two ball mixed foursome at Roblin Golf and Country Club on Sunday. Winners in the Championship flight were Calvin Keast and Megan Sanders, with Ken Chase and Forrie Chase second. First flight victors were John Hampson and Liz Bruce. Pete Motyka and Gay Sewell were second. Second flight winners were Bill Hampson and Agnes Peterson. Ike Beattie and Mil Misener were second. Low hid den hole scorers were Vera Dillin and Fred Bauming. high hid den hole scorers were Pete Motyli and Gay Sewell. Weather permitting, ladies will hold the club tournament on Monday October 2, teeing off by 2 pm. entry $1 with lunch.

Manitoba agriculture specialists advise applying nitrogen phosphate and potash with the seed or in a band. On light soils delay spring nitrogen broadcast to prevent leaching. Fall or spring application yields similar response, with forage crops often benefiting from fall fertilizer and cost savings from buying in fall.
