A telephone survey shows 60 percent of Canadians think won’t burn as fast while 20 percent fear fire when aerosol or container labels show either word. Experts urge using fire-retardant not fireproof to avoid safety risk.
4H aims to teach youths ages ten to twenty one practical skills through project work. Demonstrations and public speaking boost poise while meetings train democratic procedure. The program fosters initiative, organization, teamwork, and social experience to produce better citizens. Volunteers are needed as leaders to support activities and functions. Contact the Russell Agricultural Office for cooking and turkey resources ahead of Thanksgiving. Roblin Horticultural Society held its Centennial Show at Roblin Collegiate on Friday August 25. Winners in Class A included Asters, Bagonias, Calendula, Candytuft, Carnations, Clarkia, Cornflower, Cosmos, Dahlia, Gladioli, Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Petunias, Salvia, Scabiosa, Snapdragons, Stocks, Sweet Peas, and Zinnias with multiple named exhibitors such as Mrs A Tummon Ruth Sanders Olive Arnott and Miss Alice Tummon among others. Class B features Chrysanthemum, Delphinium, Lily, Pansy, Phlox, Pinks, Roses, Scabosa and other varieties. Class C lists African Violets Begonias Cactus Ferns Geraniums Gloxinia and houseplant collections. Class D covers various flower arrangements including dining room, living room and table pieces with numerous contributors.
A couple celebrated a marriage with a reception in the lower hall of the Masonic Temple. Mr. Kelly, Collins, their uncle, proposed the toast. The bride wore a blue viscose linen dress and coat with white accessories and a mauve orchid corsage. The couple reside at 2305 Wardlaw Ave Winn ipz Manitoba.
Harold Jans Porteous of Bredenburg Saskatchewan appeared before Magistrate G A Lawman in Dauphin Police Court charged with impaired driving and driving while suspended in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He was convicted on both counts and fined $155.50 for impaired driving and $102 for driving under suspension. He must pay by October 14 or serve five months in Dauphin Provincial Gaol.
Thirty five grade XII graduates will be honoured at a ceremony on October 7 at Roblin Collegiate Auditorium. University course guest speaker is Norman G. Harvey Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Education. Karen Cross will deliver the valedictory. Exercises start at 7:30 p.m. Public invited.
The Manitoba soil testing lab at the University of Manitoba can handle about 250 samples daily. Samples must be representative, dried within 24 hours, and two samples per field from specified depths. For a 40 acre field a minimum of 10 sampling sites recommended. Cost is 3.00 per sample plus mail to Winnipeg facility.
Mrs Gay Mitchell returned home Monday after two months with relatives and friends on the west coast. Visitors this week included Mrs Alanson of Bortegela Prairie and Mrs Moore of Norgate at Allanson and Moore homes in Roblin and Yorkton. Rev and Mrs Ross Willis and family were enroute to Winnipeg from Calgary. Robert Oliphant came home Saturday after summer work for P FRA at Shellmouth Dam Vanguard Sask land Pincer Creek Alberta. Rev E S and Mrs Dixon and Brian attended the funeral of Elmer B R Dixon in Hamiota. Mr Dixon, Central Park Lodge Brandon, died in Brandon General Hospital in his 60s. Hes tor Belton of Montreal visiting Mrs J Kines and Mon Allen Martin, and he visited Jack Bettar’s Swan River home. This is Hector’s first trip back in thirty years.
Two gentlemen at a Montreal expo lingered near the schnapps exhibit and one wandered into a basement. He emerged on a street after several minutes and quipped that a stranger had a set of travi al, while his friend waited impatiently.
Shell River Council and Roblin Town planning group met October 3 in the town office to discuss a joint commission for fringe area control under Municipal Planning. Municipal Planner Marvin Borgijord outlined methods of joint control to guide growth and land use across highway commercial, heavy industry, residential, and agricultural zones.
David Arthur Rowan died Friday September 22 1987 in Winnipeg General Hospital at age 63. Funeral services were held Monday September 25 at Roblin Memorial Chapel with Rev E Dixon officiating. Interment in Castleavery cemetery. Survived by wife Gladys four sons Edwin Jack Ross Donald four daughters Ellen Betty Sharon four grandchildren two brothers George of Dropmore and Edward of Port Arthur Ontario and sister Elizabeth of Winnipeg.
Collegi ate capers at Roblin Collegiate Institute welcome a record enrolment of over 400 students and 19 teachers. Graduation exercises are set for October 7 at the Collegiate. Elections for president, vice president, and other posts were held September 4 with Margaret McMurray as president and Ron Yakimishyn as vice president.
The Roblin District Centennial Committee calls citizens 74 and over to sign up for the Pioneer Awards Dinner on October 18, 1967. Submit names to Miss K. Black at Roblin Town Office by October 7, 1967, or call 987-2554.
