Mr and Mrs Fred Ward announce the engagement of their daughter Kath Yvonne to Kenneth Charles eldest son of Mr and Mrs Charles McKenzie. The wedding is set for Saturday October 8 at 3 00 PM in Deepdale United Church.
Innstro James Puritch of 201 Milton St Flin Flon died in his sleep August 24 at home. Born September 5 1881 in Toperover Austria he came to Canada 1899 and worked as farmer then hardware and furniture business in Esterhazy Roblin. Survived by Lena wife James son Aatun Lillian daughter Eugene granddaughter Sandra three brothers and one sister. He served as Chacer School trustee eight years and was active in Roblin church affairs. Pallbearers listed. Rozans Funeral Home and Sneath arranged services.
Funeral services were held for Harry Cox of Brandon Manitoba at the Silverwood Free Methodist Church. He died September 10 1960 after a long illness. Interment followed at Mount View Cemetery. Cox served in the Canadian Army and later did ministry work in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He is survived by his son Jack and two daughters plus nine grandchildren.
Manitoba detours fall waterfowl rules permit only one canvasback or redhead per hunter this season. Hon H Witney led a national effort to protect the two species as Manitoba participates in the campaign. The rule forbids taking both species in a single hunt to curb a serious kill-off.
Ag rep reports ongoing Brucellosis blood control across the province with Boulton testing in progress. Half the district completed, farmers urge improved livestock facilities and pens, gates, and chutes plans available. Soils specialist Graham Somers to assist two weeks on soil management. Toadflax infestation growing. weed inspector Scott notes growing sightings and urges farmers to identify weed mistaken for snapdragon to prevent escalation.
Local residents attend meetings and visits across towns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Mrs. K R McBain attends Prairie Christian Training Centre at Qu Appelle, while the Evening Guild gathers at Mrs J Goodbun’s on Tuesday. A golf team from Roblin wins prizes at Swan River with 106 players participating. Several attendees travel to Grandview for the Teachers Convention on October 6 and 7, and others plan trips to Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Calgary. ML A Keith Alexander joins Winnipeg committee sessions on the Manitoba Election Act.
District readers note a flurry of visits and travel. Brandon residents Mr and Mrs George Vickers and Ernie Armistead hosted. Several locals dropped by Gilbert Plains and Dauphin for social and business runs. Jacob injuries from a highway mishap were minor. vehicle damage estimated at two hundred dollars. University plans draw Vernon Keil to Saskatoon. L Johnson visits from Saskatoon. Ontario visits return as Robi Austin recovers from a long Ontario trip. Hampson travels to Winnipeg for a hardware convention. A hunting trip to Hudson Bay gathers Frank Topham Jimny Topham Richie Erhardt Wm Rehn and others.
Mrs. Wm Hampson and Mr and Mrs Dave Gawley motored to Flin Flon on Wednesday with a brief family outing and travel note.
The Knox United Church Junior Choir reorganizes for the season under director Bils L Bruce and pianist Mrs W Ford. The choir meets at the church each Friday at 7 p.m. for practices.
A September 11 gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Albert Nernberg hosted about seventy friends and relatives for a miscellaneous shower honoring Marion Nernberg, the October bride elect. Activities included group singing, a skit titled Marriage in Primitive Times, a poem read by Mrs. Marshall, anecdotes, and a mock trailer of gifts drawn by a tiny bride and groom Donna Doering and Mervin Edel. Marion gave a brief thank you, followed by lunch served by the hostesses.
Since taking over on May 1 1960 in Roblin I have done my best to protect persons and property. I note lack of parental cooperation with youths and urge reminders that sidewalks are for pedestrians. Drivers ignore stop signs yield signs and double park on Main Street. Trucks lack proper lights require owner clearly painted on sides and addressed. School starts so adhere to school zone speed limits. Intoxicated persons on streets will be arrested. Prosecutions totals and fines are listed, total fines 535.00.
Hillsburg Municipal Council meets September 7 1960 chaired by Reeve John Perchaluk with five councillors. They discuss requesting 60 percent grants from the Department of Public Works for 1961 road projects including bus routes grading gravelling near PTH 5 and multiple east of grid references, plus plans for a Shell River bridge south of 6-28-27W and a November 2 1960 tax assessment revision.
Manitoba announces deer season opens November 7 in southern areas with Area 1 and 2 north of The Pas opening October 31 and closing November 19. Southern zone may end November 19 or 26 based on game abundance. Early mouse season runs September 19 to October 15 in northern Manitoba. Moose and elk seasons run November 28 to December 10, with northern districts and Duck Mountains offering resident-only hunts and a single moose or elk limit.
Peggy Neville joins Stu Davis as soloist on CBC TV western music series Red River Jamboree. She is part of the Neville Sisters who have sung on Music Makers and Talent Caravan. The show is produced in Winnipeg CBC studios.
Humphrey Wilson of Neclin Manitoba objects to the Manitoba Mines and Natural Resources pamphlet setting sharptail grouse season from September 30 to November 5 with eight birds per day and sixteen in possession. He cites Dr Merkley and local observers reporting bird scarcity and warns of potential refinement by youth biologists, calling for preservation and criticizing policy as dictatorial and harmful to wild game life.
Shirley Otke and Herbert Wildeman united in marriage at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Roblin on September 10. The ceremony featured solo pieces and a bouquet of bronze shasta poms. Attendants included maid of honor Gertrude Otke, bridesmaid Mrs Garfield Wildeman, best men Frederick Busch and Garfield Wildeman, and ushers Wilfred Wildeman Arnold Otke. After a reception in Roblin Memorial Hall the couple honeymooned and will reside in Fort William Ontario. Readouts include guests from Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta and the ceremony notes.
The Roblin Women's Institute met at Mrs. George Kelso's home on September 15. President Mrs. T. Sanders chaired. Members discussed history project by Mr. John Arnott, voted $10 to Cancer Society, and planned notices for Extension Service courses. Demonstrations of two practical supper dishes were followed by lunch and accordion solos by Herbert Andres.
