Village council meeting held Tuesday September 13 1960

The regular council session in Roblin on September 13 1960, chaired by Mayor F A Newton, approved August minutes and reported general accounts paid and passed. Licenses issued, sewer and water works By-Law 521 reviewed, street grant request filed, building permits approved, and By-Law 523 authorized transfer of Lot 20. Village donates 150 to cemetery committee.

Mrs W Taylor of Dauphin spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs H Ayer. Mrs R Fisher returned from hospital. Mr and Mrs Powell and Mrs B Williams visited relatives. Harvesting is wrapping up this week. Ladies Aid postponed to Sept 21 at Mrs Rankin’s home. No Deepdale church service next Sunday due to Rally Day in Roblin. next Deepdale service Sept 25 at 3 pm. Russell Clarke Phyllis returned home Sept 5 from Kisbey. The Cardon and Furner families visiting E Fletcher. Oliphants visited Lorne Nicholson. M V G Gilpin of White Rock left after visiting JJ Adams. Miss Vivian Currey moved to Dauphin for Woolsworth job.

Hospital Aid Plans Tag Day On Sept 17

The Hospital Aid group met September 6 at 2 30 pm with president Mrs G Mitchell presiding. A tag day is planned for September 17 with Ways and Means in charge. Members discussed purchases for the hospital including a new E G machine and various items costing 890 50. Volunteers were invited to help with canning and jams jellies and pickles.

Explorers Organize for New Season at Knox United Church

The Explorer girls held an organizational meeting at Knox United Church on Friday September 9 at 4 00 p m with 22 Explorers present Officers elected included Chief Explorer Maureen Spear Keeper of the Log Joan McBride and Keeper of the Chest Margaret Arnott Arrangements were made for a breakfast hike on Saturday September 17 with explorers and counselors meeting at the church at 6 a m Counselors for the season are Mrs H Oliphant Mrs L Simpson Mrs R McBride and Mrs D Staple.

Nellie Isabel Appel widow of James Appel dies at 61

Funeral services were held at All Saint's Anglican Church in Togo Saskatchewan for Nellie Isabel Appel age sixty one who died suddenly August 27 1960 at Kamsack Union Hospital. Rev H Former officiated with Wilson Funeral Home in charge. Interment in Togo cemetery. She was born in Rossburn Manitoba and educated in Zorra School District and Togo. She married James Appel in 1917 and was active in P W M Ruth Chapter CBS All Saint's W A Togo Homemakers and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion. She leaves daughters Elaine Wilson Cheryl Crudrman Adel Olson and sons William Dale and her mother and siblings.

Funk-Twordun wedding in Roblin Manor Church

Sylvia Ann Twerdun and George Isaac Funk united in a Sept 3 ceremony at Knox United Church Roblin Man officiated by Rev. Ross Williams. An indoor reception followed at Roblin Memorial Hall with over five hundred friends. They will reside in Roblin after a British Columbia honeymoon.

Agricultural report on shelterbelts and farm landscape

Harold Boughton reports Roblin Ag Rep. district farmers praise improved road access while shelterbelts along road allowances vanish under new programs. Indian Head Forestry Station offers tree planting to form natural, snow-ward shelterbelts for farmsteads with Elm Ash Maple Caragana Poplar and evergreens. Farmers should apply to the Ag Rep office for a detailed plan emphasizing simple, natural designs and landscape harmony.

Shell River Council Holds Regular Meeting September 7 1960

The Rural Municipality of Shell River met with Reeve F. H. Wilson presiding and full council present. Minutes from August 3 and August 8 were adopted. Accounts were approved, with refunds and tax adjustments noted for Grave Plot and building removal. A Prairie Farm Assistance Act application was considered, and H A Watson’s grader operator resignation accepted. Next meeting set for October 5 at 2:00 p.m.

A six year old blind girl named Judy learns to roller skate with help from her older brother. Through the Pre School Department of The Canadian Institute for the Blind the family shows that blindness need not deprive a child of a normal happy life. The appeal urges support for CNIB’s multi service program and asks readers to give generously.

Substitute teacher questioned by parent at Roblin grade class

A substitute teacher faced skepticism from a parent after overhearing a Grade I pupil say the substitute isn’t real, just an ordinary person. A newlywed couple solved a wedding gifts transport problem by using a hearse, with a fragile cedar chest noted on the box as well. In sports and fishing, Harry and Tom fished at Madge Lake landing a 20 pound Jackfish, measured at 43 inches, and noted 14 pickerel caught.
