Miss Hazel Watson Honored At Miscellaneous Shower

Friends and neighbors gathered at Mrs. W. Lowe's home for a miscellaneous shower honoring Hazel Watson a bride elect. Contests and games amused guests as Hazel faced a playful mock court, many gifts were presented, and a delicious lunch was served.

Roblin Wedding Unites Ada Joan Cockerill and Cecil Peats

Ada Joan Cockerill and Cecil Albert Peats wed at United Church Roblin Manitoba on Thursday afternoon Rev Ross Williams officiated. The bride wore a full length gown of nylon overlaid with lace and carried American Beauty roses. Attendants included Nettie Cockerill as maid of honor and Donald Peats as best man with ushers and page boys from both families. A reception followed at Roblin Memorial hall. Guests came from Lynn Lake Winnipeg Ottawa and Saltcoats.

Provincial Telephone Directory Due Soon in Manitoba

The Provincial Telephone Directory will reach subscribers outside Winnipeg in November. Over 88 000 copies will be distributed province wide, about 5 000 more than last year. The ad lists delivery options and page five offers personal listings for frequently called numbers. Replace old directory with the new one.

Village Meeting Sets Budgets and Permits in Roblin

The Roblin village council met Tuesday October 11 1960 with F A Newton presiding. Minutes from Sept 13 were read and approved. Accounts for payment covered numerous individuals firms and services along with building permits for several dwellings and a drug license. A plan was approved to study town planning using provincial information.

Marion Baeh Wins Spelling Contest in Goose Lake Final

Eleven contestants competed at the Collegiate Auditorium on Friday October 21 with Marion Bach and Betty Boyce reaching the final elimination. Betty’s disqualification on a technicality handed Bach the win and both received winner’s ribbons and prizes. Bach advances to divisional semi finals October 27 in Grandview Manitoba.

Local residents travel for meetings and visits

Local Mrs. Lydia Miller returned home from Winnipeg after attending the Manitoba Women's Hospital Auxiliary Association conference. Miss Stefania Filewich left for Regina Saskatchewan last week where she is employed by D. Ackland and Sons Company. Mr and Mrs Steve Filewich accompanied by Mrs H Chick motored to Regina last week where they visited friends and relatives for a couple of days.

Deerings Tour Roblin Area Then Visit Nova Scotia

Social Mr and Mrs Frank Deering of Ninaimo BC spent two weeks visiting friends and relatives in Roblin and district. Mrs J Adam visited her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs E W Scott at Biggar Sask last week. Mr and Mrs George Duns left for Greenwood NS to visit their family Mr and Mrs Bill Lavatte and children travelling by air from Winnipeg to Halifax.

Windecker couple marked Golden Wedding at Roblin church

Mr and Mrs Rudolph Windecker of Roblin celebrated their golden wedding on October 17 1960. Friends and relatives gathered in St Matthew s Lutheran lower hall on October 9 to honour the couple and presented a Chesterfield suite a kitchen chrome suite and a money purse. Rev Paul Borchardt gave an address on behalf of the Win deckers.

Goose Lake School Board Accepts Van Tenders 1961

At the October 6 1960 Goose Lake School Board meeting van tenders for a two year term starting January 1 1961 were approved for routes 1 through 15. Several payments to local merchants and suppliers were approved totaling various small and large amounts.

Roblin elects Jim Hilland and Walter Lupichuk to council

Election results show Jim Hilland 183 votes and Walter Lupichuk 167 winning two year terms as Roblin councillors on October 21. Other candidates Vince Reyda 148 and Alvin Bach 123 trailed, with 403 electors voting and 185 ballots casting for a single councillor.

Poppy Tag Day Slated For Saturday Nov 5th

The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion met with 37 visitors on October 11. Reports show San Clara ten Inglish Grandview seventeen Bowsman five and Roblin twenty three members present. A Poppy Tag Day and Tea are planned for November 5 with next meeting set for November 8. A card party October 18 featured nine tables. ladies’ high was Mrs Free land, ladies’ low Mrs Currey, gents’ high Keith Arnott, gents’ low Hank Cappelle.

United Church Ladies Aid Meeting at Mrs Sangster Home

The Knox United Church Ladies Aid met at Mrs. Adam Sangster’s home with fourteen members and two visitors. A donation to United Church Home for Senior Citizens at Pilot Mound was approved and half the vacuum cleaner cost would be paid by the Evening Guild. Meeting adjourned with prayers and a social lunch. The November meeting is set for Mrs. T. H. Taylor’s home on Nov 3 at 2 30 p.m.

Courses Offered at Brandon Agricultural Extension Centre

The Brandon Agricultural Extension Centre lists short courses for rural residents, with university and government instructors. Programs run Oct to Apr include Farm Management Beef Cattle Rural Leadership Farm Power and Machinery, Dairying Soils and Crops Weed Inspectors and more, with dormitory housing and meals at 10 dollars weekly and a 5 dollar registration. Makaroff Ladies Aid sets October 21 program note

The Makaroff Ladies Aid sponsored an enjoyable evening in the Mak aroff hall on Friday October 21. A sewing knitting and crochet display, home produce table, and cake weight contest drew a large crowd. The concert featured Makaroff Glee Club Fariel Wilson Eileen Traub and Roblin Choir conducted by Mr Calvert with two songs by Calvert. The event closed with lunch and social time despite snow on Deepdale hill.

Arndts Celebrate Silver Wedding With Surprise Party

A surprise party at the home of Mr and Mrs Sam Arndt marked their Silver Wedding Anniversary on Thursday Oct 13 About fifty relatives neighbours and friends attended Rev Schmidt gave an address The original wedding party of 25 years ago attended at the head table Hosts served a dainty lunch and presented gifts to the couple.

Balewich Rites Held At Shortdale For Polish Born Farmer

Funeral services for Mariam Balewich of Shortdale Manitoba were conducted Thursday October 20 at 11 am in Shortdale Roman Catholic Church. He died October 17 1960 after a long illness at 73. Interment followed at Shortdale Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike and Felix Gereliuk Walter Pachkowski Stanley Konchowski Chris Trilinski and Mike Trilinski. Born in Poland he came to Canada in 1908 settling at Shortdale working briefly for CNR before farming until 1957. He married Pauline Geryluk in Shortdale in 1912 and was a Roman Catholic. Survived by wife Pauline and sisters Lena in Poland and Mary in Chicago Illinois.
