Two Men One Horse Origin of the Term Hitchhike

The essay explains that hitchhiking began in horse days not with cars. Two men shared one horse: one rode ahead on horseback while the other walked. They swapped by dismounting, hitching the horse to a tree, then hiking onward until the foot traveler caught up and mounted again.

Meeting of Makaroff Women's Institute at Mrs Duns home

Eight members attended the October 13 meeting at Mrs. Jack Duns' home with jams for the local Hospital pantry. Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. Pound read May and June minutes. treasury stood at 60.24 in June and 69.79 in October. Discussions covered leadership school, safety association newsletters, family books, a land rover fund drive, Sunshine and Shower reports, centennial plate sales, and district history copies. Plans to invite district President Mrs. Nowosad to the November meeting were made. Lunch followed.

Collegiate Capers Celebrates Graduates and Club Honors

On October 9 graduation year 71 was held for 52 former students. A banquet, exercises, and a dance transformed the gym into a Rose Garden led by Veronica Bilous and Rev Boyko. Officers named on the Student Council include Reg Van Crecht, Bernice Lungal, Judy Tucker, Dave Livingstone. First Driver Education class held October 14 with 16 students. Cross Country team honored for placing first at Mt. Agassiz then sixth at the Provincial Meet in Winnipeg. Volleyball season opens with junior and senior teams hosting matches against Russell.

Ochre River to Open Parkland Book Depot Event

The Ochre River Book Depot of Parkland Regional Library Service opens Friday at 7 30 p m in the Women's Institute Hall. The ceremony includes regional officials and locals with nine depots active and three more planned in Winnipegosis McCreary and Gilbert Plains. A bookmobile service is planned to reach rural areas later this fall.

Recreation Ramblings from Roblin October meeting notes

The Roblin and district Recreation Committee met on October 4 in the Municipal office. The summer program was reviewed and the committee seeks free dance sponsorship with the band paid from its own funds. Plans for a day centre for senior citizens were discussed, locating a ground floor uptown site remains a hurdle. Organizations awaiting budgets for next year must submit them by November 15. A thank you was given to the Catholic Ladies for serving lunch to seniors at the dam tour. Deepest sympathy to Mrs Mervin Yakimishyn and family for their bereavement. Mervin served as Shell River representative on the Recreation Committee.

Mr and Mrs Harold Nash announce the marriage of their eldest son Richard George to Miss Betty Anne Telford in Calgary on September 24. Mr and Mrs Richard Nash will reside in Calgary.

Canvass for U.N.LC.E.F. in Roblin on October 30

Members of Mark '69 plan an afternoon canvass through Roblin as part of the U.N.LC.E.F. appeal. Boxes will be placed in local stores to collect contributions from country residents for the cause.

Municipal Court Fines and Suspensions Highlight Report

The report lists penalties by province officials including Conservation Officer Marcel Paul and others. Fines range from about $10 to $205 with court costs. a three year suspension of big game hunting privileges is imposed on Dennis Pelletier. Magistrate F M Manwaring and D C Rowat preside. Roblin UCY Delegates Attend Winnipeg Convention

Loretta Styba and Ruth Senderewich from Roblin UCY joined Fathers Winchar and Kysko and Mrs. Helen Lukie on a Winnipeg trip for a convention of UCY UCW L and BUK. The event featured registration, sessions at Manitoba centre, a Fort Garry Hotel banquet, a Pilgrim Wheel cruise, and a workshop uniting youth groups with awards and gifts for standout participants.

The Manitoba Department of Agriculture and Canada Manpower Corporation will sponsor courses in the Roblin Agricultural District including a Beef Production Course running four weeks in January and February for 20 participants. Applications available at the office with future advertising planned. Warble and louse control advised for fall and winter livestock management. Warble infested cattle to be banned from Alberta auctions effective January 1, 1972. Display day set for November 9 at Roblin Arena to compare feed processing machinery and review livestock nutrition. Plans for corrals and housing layouts available at the office free of charge.

Quick Action Saves Crops in North Dakota Field Fire

On October 10 a fire of unknown origin broke out in a field owned by Mr and Mrs Sorochuk about 15 miles north of Roblin. Neighbors and fire guards contained the blaze before it spread, saving most remaining crops though about eight acres were lost in the swath.

Deepdale Ladies Aid Meeting Notes October 14

The Deepdale Ladies Aid met at Mrs. Kenneth McKenzie's home with eight members and one visitor. They read Psalm 65 and the Lord's Prayer, approved June minutes, and reported a balance of 121.49 on October 1. They voted a 15 donation to United Appeal and restored meetings to the second Wednesday. Mizpah Benediction closed the session.
