Walter C Weir was sworn in Monday as Manitoba s fifteenth premier succeeding Duff Roblin He becomes one of the province s youngest leaders and will also serve as minister of federal provincial relations and chair Manitoba development authority Weir born January 7 1929 in High Bluff Man has held municipal and provincial posts including Minnedosa councillor deputy mayor and minister of municipal affairs He is married to Harriet Thompson and has four children Leslie Joby Pat and Cameron.

Mrs. Jim Martin lies in Roblin hospital and hopes for a speedy recovery. Mrs. Elizabeth Bruce is at the Co operative College in Saskatoon this week. Miss Hazel Mitchell of Winnipeg visited her parents the Mitchells and other relatives after attending the School Trustees Convention in Winnipeg from November 12 to 15. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter were returning from an East trip where they visited their daughter.

Former Bield couple celebrate golden wedding

Mr and Mrs Alex Miller will mark their fiftieth wedding anniversary on December 11. They lived in the Bield district for years, farmed until 1944, moved to Bield where he was postmaster until 1958, then relocated to Winnipeg. They have three daughters in Ottawa Winnipeg and at home. A family dinner will honor the milestone.

Hillsburg Hires Walter Nykolaishyn To Operate DEC

Hillsburg council met in Roblin with Reeve John Perchaluk Jr presiding. Walter Nykolaishyn was hired to operate a DOC Cat and Scraper at 2.50 per hour for the rest of the season.

4-H Happy Homemakers Hold Second Meeting

The Roblin Happy Homemakers 4-H Club held its second meeting with 40 members and 6 leaders present. Minutes were approved, the treasurer reported $303.08 in the bank and $1.22 on hand, and a donation thank you note was acknowledged. A Christmas party was proposed for December 1 or 9, with members listed as participants.

Cattle on feed up 2 percent in major states

The Meat Packers Council of Canada reports 2 percent more cattle and calves on feed in 32 major states as of Oct 1, with USDA estimating 3 566 000 head. July–Sept 1967 feedings rose for cattle under 700 lbs and 1 000 lbs plus overweight groups fell 14 percent. three to six month placements up 7 and over six months down 20 percent from a year earlier. Rabies notes warn of skunk activity in Manitoba and urge control and checks on barns and bins, advising contact with Dr. John E. Spicer at 937-2676 for abnormal animal behavior.

Roblin Whist Drive Aids Basketball Playoff Travel

A November 25 whist drive at Roblin Collegiate raised funds to send the basketball teams to the Provincial Playoffs at Camp Shilo. Prizes from local Roblin merchants were awarded for high and low scores among ladies and men, plus a cake raffle won by Peter Bugera and Dianne Pitt. Organizers Mrs D Staple and Mrs C McCrea led the events and the community expressed thanks to supporters. Roblin senior volleyball teams head to provincials this Saturday with coaches Mr Yeo and Mr McKay.
