The Intermountain School Division reports solid finances with no cutbacks expected as schools grow. Two budgets cover January to June 1989 and July 1989 to June 1990, totaling 4.14 million and 6.84 million respectively. Marlene Ironstand named trustee for Valley River Indian Reserve to fill Susan Severite’s vacancy through October 1988. Two local trustees honored at the Manitoba Association of School Trustees convention in Winnipeg Leo Bangle awarded for over 20 years service Borden Hawryluk receiving a 25 year silver dollar.
The Manitoba Legislature amended The Official Time Act in 1987 to start daylight saving on the first Sunday in April. This year clocks move from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday April 2, with uniform daylight saving time lasting until the last Sunday in October across the province.
The Roblin Hospital board ratified a three year MGEA contract with 3 percent annual raises retroactive to July 1, 1988. Upgrades to oxygen concentrator header and emergency power line were approved with costs under 1500 dollars. A 30 bed addition to the Personal Care Home received construction permission. The board adopted conflict of interest guidelines pay equity and discussed nursery relocation operating room access chart carts and new I med machines in travel intravenous regulators.
Roblin Town Council approved destroying old records not of historical value at the March 22 meeting. A bylaw amendment increases Water Services Board payment due to main well number two costs from 297 402 to 336 000. A clerk position committee was formed and a Land and Water strategy meeting set for April 4 at 10 am.
University of Manitoba economist Darryl Kraft warns low world stocks and droughts could push grain prices higher in 1989. Brent McConnell and Kraft see potential for favorable prices, with futures available, helping wheat farmers after six years of low returns. Livestock sectors may flourish while retiring producers worry about farm succession.
