Legion Club Rooms Renovated and Membership Drive

The Roblin Branch No. 24 of the Royal Canadian Legion met with 21 members in the Legion Club Rooms. They announced a membership drive and will host the Legion Annual Bonspiel and an April supper meeting with life memberships and past presidents' badges to be presented.

Judy Smigelsky Crowned Queen of Carnival in Roblin

Judy Smigelsky was crowned queen of Roblin's carnival at the Roblin arena by Mayor Fred Newton on March 13. Lorr aine Jerome and Debbie Radford named first and second princesses, with sponsors Roblin Collegiate, Chamber of Commerce, and Roblin Kinettes. The event featured costume contests for ages 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12, plus pairs and comics, a figure skating demonstration, a hockey game between married and single ladies, broomball, and a final door prize. Approximately $800 was raised for the new rink.

Roblin St Winds edges Virden 7 5 in overtime to take the Manitoba Midget B semi final second game and force a finals clash with Elm Creek next week. Mrs. O Hilderman Hosts Makaroff Women's Institute

The March meeting of the Makaroff Women's Institute was held at Mrs. O Hilderman's home on March 10. Six members and one visitor answered the roll call for Pictures for the Shower Committee. three members were absent. President Hilderman presided. minutes and a treasury report showing $8 were read. Correspondence included letters from the Red Cross and Cancer Society, with the latter's News Letter. funds may be raised later to support the appeal. Sunshine reports noted three treats sent out. Plans discussed for a concert, with dates adjusted. the group decided to drop the dance idea and prepare items after the next meeting, hoping full attendance to finalize details. March 25 was set for members to meet at the Hall to clean the floor. Jackpot won by Mrs. L R Beattie. Lunch afterward served by Mesdames J Duns and K Addis, co-hostesses Pearl Elliott.

Air Cadets Parade Chooses Summer Courses

On Tuesday March Sth the Air Cadets held parade with 37 cadets 4 officers 3 instructors and 7 visitors. Captain Paul Galatiuk led inspection with Lt. Graham Galatiuk and Sgt. Rick Thom. Allan Filewich was most improved earning the lanyard and a $1 bill. Cadets applied for six week courses at Camp Borden in Physical Fitness Recreation and Aero-engine study plus a four week Banff Ground Search course and a four week Europe exchange visit with a $1090 honorarium for all participants. Interviews at Portage la Prairie the weekend of March 28 will select who attends those courses.

Fire Destroys Barn Killing Fifty-Eight Pigs At Farm

A Saturday night fire partly destroyed a barn at the Mat Wehman farm in Petlura, 25 miles southeast of Roblin. Fifty-eight hogs perished in the blaze, which started around 8 p.m. local time. Fire crews battled the flames but could not save the animals.

Two New Members for Legion Auxiliary in Royal Canadian Legion

The Ladies Auxiliary held a March 5 card party in the club rooms with Mrs. C. Tummon winning Ladies High and Dorothy Jansund Ladies Low. New members Dorothy Jansund and Sandra Titanich were initiated, while several members plan to attend the March 22 bonspiel at Grandview. Senior Girls End A Big Season At Roblin

Roblin Collegiate Senior Girls closed a strong season by capturing the divisional championship after a two game total point series against Minitonas. A tough second game Saturday followed a seven point Thursday loss as coach Jim McMillan led the squad to multiple trophies for the season. Junior Girls also triumphed at Swan River, Judy Smigelski crowned carnival queen, and badminton is underway with growing student involvement and school spirit.

Parkland Festival Shows Strong Participation And Support

The community enjoyed greater festival involvement despite teacher shortages. Returns of piano teachers and students boosted activity. After nine years of competitions, adjudicators note higher standards and the award ceremony concluded a three day program with a trophy presentation. Special thanks to Roblin Recreation Committee for a $150 donation.

Three Roblin Businesses Hit In Early Saturday Break-Ins

Roblin saw three break-ins early Saturday with Kozmeniuk Hardware losing about 2400 after assailants pried the rear door and allegedly used nitroglycerine to blast the safe. The Town office was robbed of 29 dollars, Simpsons Sears mail order store entered but yielded little value. Local RCMP continue investigations.

Mustangs Win Semi Final Opener

In the Snake Creek League Bantam semi final, Roblin Mustangs beat Binscorth Hawks 8-2. Mustangs led 3-0 and 5-0 at periods, with Merv Hilland scoring five and Terry Kostick three. Pat Tanner and Bradley Matheson scored for Binscarth. A March 17 rematch in Binscarth determines who plays FoxwarrenSt Lazare winner in a March 20 title game in Foxwarren.
