Mrs Misener Rink Captures Grand Challenge and Aggregate

The Roblin ladies led by Mrs Ross Misener won the Grand Challenge Event and secured the Grand Aggregate honors with six wins. Local rink skipped by Mrs Mel Bowley were runners up with five wins in main events. Dauphin’s Mrs Dagg earned the prize for most wins without prize placement.

Hillsburg Council approves road work and payments motion

Hillsburg municipal council met March 2 with reeve Mike Filewich chairing. Motions approved include adopting last minutes, disability allowance for an applicant, and authorizing a wage-walking plan. Public works to open certain roads during snow plowing. accounts totaled with payments to Shevlin Bridge, Powell Equipment, Joe Andronyk, and multiple local school districts and residents.

Shell River W.I. Card Party Held at Hinson Home

A Shell River Women’s Institute card party was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. P. Hinson on Friday March 4. Prizes went to Mrs. Wm Anzus and Mr. mh Waggoner. consolation prizes to Mrs. Charman and Mr. Frank Limb. Total collected funds reached $600. thanks extended to Mr. and Mrs. Hanson for use of their home.

Tummel Calf Club Holds March Meet

The March meeting of the Tummel Calf Club was held at Marjorie Pyoty’s home with six members present. Mr. Ed Somers attended and shared interesting slides. Meeting adjourned for a delicious lunch. The next meeting will be April 5 at Sylvia Twerdun’s home.

Red Cross Work In Manitoba Highlights 1994

Volunteer women produced 42 060 clothing and bedding items for relief and 367 467 wipes for the blood transfusion service. 16 582 patients received 27 327 bottles of whole blood and plasma free of charge. Junior Red Cross members taught citizenship in 2 843 classrooms. Emergency aid totaling 3 212 went to veterans dependents and disaster victims. Over 15 600 volunteers worked on projects and two outpost hospitals served 4 055 people. Water safety training reached 3 180 participants with 351 receiving water therapy. The campaign urges giving to reduce drownings and support the Red Cross.

Annual Meeting of Credit Union Society Held at Lyric Theatre

The fourteenth annual meeting of Repim Credit Union Society Ltd was held at the Lyric Theatre. Directors, supervisory and credit committees reported 447 loans for the year. Shares rose 70 percent despite a poor district year. Cash in business totaled 197 087 with a 3 percent dividend declared. Grapefruit N Bread Stuffed Fillets Recipe

A recipe using cod or haddock with grapefruit sections and bread stuffing. Melt butter, saute onion and celery, mix with toasted bread cubes grapefruit pieces and seasonings, add grapefruit juice. Place stuffing in center of fish fillets, bake at 350 for 40 minutes.

Local School Board Sets Meeting And Easter Plan

The Lake School Board met on Tuesday March 3 in the Collegiate with most trustees present. Motions were carried including accepting last minutes, tender details for van routes due by April 1 1955, next meeting set for April 6 at 8 pm and Easter closure from April 7 to April 18. The secretary is to verify substitute payments and require principals to report absences with dates, ensure qualified substitutes, and arrange checks with Roblin Electric. Accounts totaling various amounts were authorized for payment to multiple local suppliers and staff.

Roblin Creamery Wins Best Kept Interior Award 1954

Roblin Creamery under J J Collins with R J Vaudry and staff won the top Manitoba award for best kept interior during 1954 at the Dairy Convention in Winnipeg held February 22 to 24. Local creamery also earned several other prizes, narrowly missing top honor for highest scoring butter.

Shell River council keeps telephone rates through year

The Shell River Municipality held a March 2 1955 meeting approving February minutes and accounts, approving disability pensions for Harry M Comrie and Wm Ray Buick, and R J Watson. It recommends maintaining current telephone rates for the year to avoid hardship on farmers and gradual increases in coming years. It calls for a Salk treatment per Health Department, a 100 watt street light near Lots 32 33 plan 996 from Manitoba Power, and delegation expenses for scraper and secretary trip. Next meeting set for April 6 at 2 p.m.

Local society notes report Miss Arlene Currey visiting Brandon this week. Also noted are two Roblin men’s rinks taking part in the Curling Bonspiel at Makarorf. Funeral attendance by Miss C Smith in Shoal Lake and hockey in Kamsack. Five Roblin rinks enter the Annual Grandview Bonspiel with skips Sorbo Mitchell Dingle Newton Large. Rose Topham of Yorkton is Mrs. Viettr Topham’s mother and TEVALIVE associates.

Hospital Aid Meeting Sets End May Bazaar Plans

Roblin Hospital Aid held its February meeting with fifteen members. A donation from the T Eaton Co provides remnants to sew into aprons and small items for the annual Bazaar planned for late May. Slips and plants are requested to support gardening and transplanting before the bazaar.

Funeral service held for former Gilbert Plains resident

Funeral services for Mrs. Isabella Lee age 79 of Gilbert Plains were held at the Pentecostal Church with Rev. O Olfrey officiating. Interment followed at Roblin District cemetery under Sneath Funeral Service. She died Feb 25 in Winnipeg General Hospital after a short illness. Born Isabella Wallace in Owensound Ontario she moved to Gilbert Plains at 14, then Invermay Sask for 15 years, Roblin briefly, then back to Gilbert Plains where she lived until death. She married John Sertel Barry in 1894 and later Thomas Lee in 1944, both predeceased her. Surviving are two sons Raymond Barry and Sidney Barry, three daughters Archibald Campbell Doris Middlemiss and Mrs Charles Perret, plus a sister Mrs Wm Mitchell.

Funeral Service Held For Mrs P Andres in Roblin

Mrs Julianna Andres wife of Phillip Andres of Roblin Manitoba died at 51 after a lengthy illness in Winnipeg General Hospital. Born Juliana Dietrich in MacNutt Saskatchewan she married Phillip in 1922 and lived in Roblin since 1926. Survived by four sons two daughters and several siblings. Services held March 7 at St Mathews Lutheran Church Roblin with pallbearers listed and Sneath Funeral Service in charge.

Mary Ann Gail Zimmer Funeral Rites Held in Shevlin

Mary Ann Gail Zimmer of Shevlin died at home after a short illness at 2 months. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church Shevlin with interment in Shevlin Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Rossnagel officiated. Sneath Funeral Service handled arrangements. She is survived by Herman and wife and two brothers Roland and Daniel.

Rate Increase Opposed by M F A C Brief to Public Board

The Manitoba Telephone System faced pressure as the M F A C urged rate increases only to the minimum level necessary for efficient operation and sound development. The brief was presented to municipal and public utility board authorities to limit pricing changes.
