Togo Mixed Bonspiel Opens With Forty Rinks Competing

Forty rinks took part in the Togo Annual Mixed Bonspiel opening Monday February 17 with five events contested. Winners included Togo led squads in Memorial and Coronation events, and local clubs shared other plaques. Banquet and open house followed. officials thanked visiting teams and look forward to next year.

Hillsburg Council Applies For Recreation Grant

The R. M. Hillsburg council met February 13 1969 with Reeve John Perchaluk Jr presiding. It filed an application for a Public Recreation Commission grant for 1969 and passed By-law No 447 assigning Tax Sale Certificates to Earl Sanders. Members will attend a Municipal Seminar in Brandon March 5 6 with $30 allowances. Carl Semchuk to be paid $2 per hour for operating Cat. Accounts approved. Next meeting set for March 13 1969 at 1:30 p.m.

Hospital Aid Ice Carnival planned for Roblin Arena

Plans for the Roblin Hospital Aid Ice Carnival to be held Friday March 7 at Roblin Arena. Skaters from Yorkton and Roblin clubs perform with a queen contest, costume judging at 8 pm, prizes of 1 and 50 cents, tickets grant queen votes, proceeds support local hospital supplies. Contests include a battle to the finish broomball and door prize draw.

Tummel UCW Meets At Mrs Livingston Home

The Tummel U C W group met February 12 with 11 members present. A quilt frame was active, led by Mrs Grant Buick in worship. Mrs Michael Robin and Mrs Gordon Jory reported on the Swan River Presbyter y meeting, and China study began with talks on early church history and the Tummel Church. The next gathering will be March 12 at Mrs Cliff McCrea’s home.

Roblin Council Approves Water Fluoridation Purchase

At the November 1968 meeting the Roblin Town Council approved fluoridation of the town water and, at the last meeting, approved purchasing supplies for the program. Fluoride is added to drinking water to prevent tooth decay.

A Job Well Done by Town Snow Cleanup Crew

The town engineer and crew cleaned the snow quickly after last Tuesday and Wednesday’s storm. Good Roads Dept crews were on the highway with snow plows as soon as the storm subsided.

Piped Oxygen Expansion Approved for Roblin Hospital

The Roblin Hospital Board meeting February 25 approved extending piped oxygen to five more rooms at about 600 dollars including tax. Applications for 1969 hospital privileges from Drs. Leahy Layng and Paul were read and accepted.

Challenge Thrown At Chamber Meeting In Roblin

Roblin Chamber of Commerce hosts February 25 meeting at the Masonic Hall with Parkland Regional Development Corporation manager Ron Kinney presenting a challenge to local businesspeople. Kinney promoted Parkland aims, regional cooperation, and local development across 10 000 square miles from Swan River to McCreary and Russell. Also speaking were Len Tough of the Manitoba Department of Industry and Commerce and M L A Wally McKenzie. Hugh Kines chaired. Sutton and Hilland introduced the guests.

February 25 negotiations between the Intermountain School Division No 36 Teachers and Trustees failed to settle a 1969 salary agreement after 22 articles were opened. With no compromise, both sides agree to conciliate via a Concilation Officer and, if needed, a three person Board of Arbitration. The report notes most divisions received salary funding from provincial grants while 20 percent comes from a local levy.

Horticultural Society Realizes $106.25 From Whist Party

The Roblin Horticultural Society held a March meeting with 23 present chaired by Vice President Vi Laird. A Tele phone Whist party on February 21 raised 106.25. Premiums timing for 1969 mem­berships and a Russell Short Course on March 21 were announced with speakers on annuals, plant culture, gladiolus growing, and flower arranging. A Brandon convention report noted an accident en route and a dislocated shoulder.

Band Concert Promises Fine Evening With Guest Artists

March 14 spring band concert features extra practice and two guest artists. Miss Linda Setchell, sixteen, will demonstrate baton twirling with an enviable record of 328 trophies and 308 medals in the U S A and Canada. She is a Majorette with the Regina Lions Jr. Band and has won multiple championships and scholarships in Saskatchewan and Moose Jaw events, plus a top finish at a National Twirling Competition in St Paul Minnesota.

Shell River Council Seeks 1969 Recreation Grant

The Shell River Municipality council meeting on February 11 1969 approved filing for the 1969 Community recreation grant. Council allocated 30 for each secretary treasurer and councillors to attend a Municipal Officials Seminar in Brandon plus 10 cents per mile for one car. Tenders for diesel fuel gasoline oil and greases for 1969 opened with bids due March 7. January cheques totaling 14639 99 were confirmed and the next meeting was set for March 7 at 1 30 p.m.

Around Town Note on visits during U of M mid-term break

Janice Arnott visited at home during the U of M mid-term break. Shirley Tucker and Joyce Ken drick of Winnipeg spent a few days visiting their homes. The Arnott and Cranwell families hosted relatives from Winnipeg and Borketon over the weekend. Gerald Harper’s farewell party was held Saturday evening.
