Seventeen New Kinsmen Join Roblin Kinsmen Club

At the February 20 meeting the Kinsmen Club heard a film and talk by Bob Davidson of a vinyl lined swimming pool firm with examples in Gladstone Melita and Dauphin. Roblin Elk's Lodge also weighed in on a pool for Roblin. The event marked the third anniversary with Deputy Governor Ed Tinkler of Brandon and three Dauphin Kinsmen attending. Seventeen new members joined the year and Roblin helped sponsor a Russell club. Wives consider forming a Kinette Club. A Kinsmen bonspiel is planned in Brandon and a rink will play broom ball at the Hospital Aid Carnival with motor toboggan races announced for Sunday. Harvey Simpson leads and details appear in the paper advertisement.

Collegiate Bonspiels Highlight R C I Teams

R C I’s MacNutt Bonspiel rink led by Greg Boyce won first place in the third event while D Arcy Keast’s rink at Russell Collegiate Bonspiel did not place. Roblin Junior Boys finally won the Gilbert Plains Tournament, with Jack McBride earning MVP after scoring 68 points. Roblin Junior Girls edged Gilbert Plains 18 to 17 in a Friday sudden death playoff.

Town Council Approves Water Fluoridation Plan

The February 13 1961 council meeting authorized fluoridating the town water supply. Art Currey to purchase supplies, attend Winnipeg course, and Roblin Co-operative Ltd tendered fuels accepted. By-law 682 for social assistance passed and several financial items approved.

By-Election Set For Roblin Councillor Seat

Following Councillor Gerald Harper's resignation and transfer to Brandon, Roblin will hold a by election to fill the vacant seat. Nomination day was February 21 with Walter Lupichuk and Joseph Perchaluk listed as candidates. Polls open Friday March 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Elk's Hall in Roblin Manitoba. Roblin Band Plans Spring Concert And Festival Entry

A Roblin Collegiate meeting on February 11 outlined the Annual Spring Band Concert set for March 14 with guest artists Barbara Carey soprano from Regina and Linda Setchell baton twirler from Regina Lions Junior Band. The Roblin Band will enter Moose Jaw Kinsmen International Band Festival in Regular Band Class plus Fancy Drill and Special Brass Classes. Five Roblin members joined Manitoba Youth Concert Band rehearsal in Brandon on February 20.

Afternoon U C W Unit Meets At Mrs J Kines Home

Roblin United Church Women afternoon unit met February 5 at Mrs J Kines with 16 members and 5 visitors present. They recorded 43 hospital visits and heard reports on the Annual Presbytery Meeting at Swan River. A quilt to South Indian Lake was mentioned and officers for 1969 were named.

Minor Hockey Day Aids Easter Seals Drive Highlights Local Youth Teams

The Easter Seals campaign kicked off with Minor Hockey Day sponsored by the Royal Purple Lodge. Pee Wees Red beat Blue 3 2 with Simon Layng scoring three for Red. Pontiacs edged Orange 2 1. Myron Kostick and David Borchardt scored for the Pontiacs and Orange respectively. Tom Thumbs Mustangs lost 6 5 to the Elks. Mervin Doering led the Elks with three goals. A broomball match saw Roblin Teachers defeat Roblin Elks and Royal Purple, with attendance treated to a figure skating solo by Veronica Bilous.

Swan River Clamps Down in Tight Bantam Midget Playoff

Week of minor hockey saw Roblin McNutt matchups with Roblin Bantam B and Swan River Midgets in a dramatic playoff at Swan River. Swan River triumphed 5 4 in a disputed goal finish. Roblin Collegiate juniors won the Gilbert Plains Junior Boys Basketball Tournament in a day of eight teams from Russell, Rossburn, Swan River, Roblin, Kamsack, Dauphin, Gilbert Plains and Grandview. Roblin beat Grandview 59-5, Gilbert Plains 58-11, and Kamsack 52-20 with Jack McBride scoring 68 across the day and named tournament MVP. Teammates included Mel Otke 21, Allen Benceyk 27, Ted Andres 3, Wayne Buick 12, Court Reyda 16, Brian Watson 22.

Roblin Legion Auxiliary Bonspiel Highlights Two Trophy Events

Roblin Legion Auxiliary Bonspiel showcased two trophy events at a February 17 one day curling meet. Teams from Roblin, San Clara, Grandview, Russell, Swan River and Rus sell competed across 12 rinks with prizes awarded to top finishers in each event. A pot luck supper followed the day of curling.

School Division Building Committee Updates Budget Plan

The building committee led by J. Bailey J. Sanchuk and A. H. Barker surveyed all schools for maintenance and materials for the coming year. They prepared a report that the board reviewed and incorporated into the proposed budget. A salary scale and janitorial working agreement were set and accepted by the board. The administration office in Grandview is now occupied by the division with final inspection pending.

Agricultural Short Course Planned at Roblin Elks Hall

The Manitoba Department of Agriculture along with Manitoba Pool Elevators National Grain Company and VelSicoi Corporation sponsor a crop production short course in Roblin on March 6 at 10 AM and 1 PM at the Elks Hall. Speakers include Niel Bill Don Rutledge J Q Forbes George Frazier. topics cover soils fertilizers liquid fertilizers weeds and weed control cost comparisons. A second short course on tillage machinery crop varieties and marketing is planned for March 12. Grain drying is urged as stored grain moisture should be lowered to 14 percent to prevent moulds bacteria and mites as spring temperatures rise.
