Unbelievable progress and a Canadian gubernatorial visit

The piece muses that rapid invention outpaces imagination, from space walks to the H bomb, then savors the Manitoba visit of the Governor General and his wife. It highlights Independent voters, then recalls Sir George and Lady Monck’s warm reception and a veteran’s poignant medal exchange story.

Trash In Orbit Project Launch On TransCanada Highway

Highway litter problem prompts a new program by minister Walther Weir introducing ten Orbits trash containers shaped like mini spaceships. Displayed at Winnipeg Red River Exhibition and Brandon Manitoba Exhibition, they will be placed along the highway with countdown signs and larger openings to deter tossing trash. Manitoba forestry reforestation aided by damp spring weather

The Manitoba Forestry Branch reports a successful reforestation season aided by cool moist spring conditions. Hon. Sterling Lyon notes a 1965 goal of 3.5 million conifer seedlings with two thirds reached by May and potential completion this fall. About 1,000 acres were scarified and seeds sown, with 250 to 300 workers planting three year old stock from Hadashville. Seedlings included white and black spruce jack pine and red pine planted mainly in southern districts and Whiteshell areas. Some frost damaged stock from 1964 has partially recovered and is being planted where viable.
