Regular Hillsburg council meeting on February 7 approves hiring pilots and tendered services for 1962 season. Included is authorizing M. J. Semochko of Russell to use aircraft CF-NPF to hunt coyotes in the municipality. Also approves hires for cat and patrol operators and fuel and gravel contracts.
The February meeting of Roblin Hospital Aid in the board room on February 6th had eight members present. A letter from the National Council of Hospital Auxiliaries noted many items of information and interest. The council plans to send drugs to India for TB patients regardless of race creed or caste. Charles E. Frosst and Co. helped ship the drugs to Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, president of the India TB Association, who expressed deep gratitude for the support.
Miss Alta Spear bride elect of February 17 was honored at a miscellaneous shower in the Bield School on February 10 at 8 p.m. Corsages were given to the guest of honor and her mother Miss Alberta Britcher escorted them to chairs. A social hour featured contests and a Bride's Book. Gifts were presented in a miniature House Trailer. Lunch followed, hosted by the Bield Ladies' Club. The report also covers the International Hospital project with two Canadian doctors named as beneficiaries. Plans were made for carnival events including candidates Sharon Radford Arlene Stefanuik and Frances Burrelle. A PA system and door prizes were discussed.
Shell River Municipal Council met February 7 1962 with Reeve F H Wilson presiding and all councilors present. Minutes of January 2 approved and accounts totalling 22900 92 authorised. Council authorized fodder provision and storage charges chargeable to 1961 revenues and passed a bylaw amendment to include land within Roblin limits. Requests to Public Works for road additions and enhanced snow plowing grants, plus multiple tenders for fuel, graders, gravel hauling, stonepicker and cat operations were accepted. Next meeting set for March 7.
Mrs J Adam left Sunday for Winnipeg to attend the annual meeting of the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Red Cross at Red Cross Lodge on February 13. Mrs Gordon Jory attended the Hospital Trustee Institute at Dauphin on February 6 and 7. Visitors to the home of Mrs George Pries included Mr and Mrs Floy Merrell of Winnipeg and Mr Harold Prier of Regina. Barry Miller spent the weekend at The Pas visiting his brother Bentley Muller and Bob Pyott.
Obituary notices announce the death of Frederick William Redman at 54 in Winnipeg with funeral at Thomson Chapel and burial at Chapel Lawn Gardens. Born in England, he moved to Roblin in 1921, later to Winnipeg, survived by Edith Redman and four grandchildren among others. Also reported is the death of Jack Pavlenko of Roblin at 63, with funeral at Roblin Greek Orthodox Church, burial in Roblin Orthodox Cemetery, and surviving wife Lena and several children in Manitoba and Ontario. detailed biographical notes cover emigration from Romania and work history.
A home safety column notes that more than 150000 accidents occurred in four western provinces last year with kitchens, halls, bathrooms, basements, and attics presenting distinct hazards. It urges awareness of timing, clutter, lighting, anchoring rugs, and medicine safety to prevent burns, cuts, falls, poisonings, and fire risks. It also invites local ladies to leave names for remodeling help with a Home Design Specialist before February 20 at the Russell Agricultural Office.
This Friday February 16 Dauphin school hosts a party with Pat Powell and his orchestra providing music. Last Saturday February 10 Roblin teams visited. Dauphin beat Roblin junior boys 14 to 13 and senior girls 68 to 14, while Roblin senior boys defeated Dauphin 37 to 27. Special thanks to referee Mr. M Yakimishyn.
The Roblin Men's Curling Club opens its 43rd Annual Bonspiel at 10 am Monday with 36 rinks entered, 24 local and 12 visiting, far fewer than last year's 50. Six events headline this year including Newton Mitchell Hilland Club Co op and Spear, plus Grand Aggregate and Hard Luck prizes. Play is progressing well and by press time the eights were reached in Newton and Mitchell, with a successful banquet held Wednesday night.
The Makaroff 4-H Garden Club held an reorganizational meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs Dick Smith on Friday February 9 1962. Officers for the season are Ronald Wilson president Frances Burrell vice president Judy Smith secretary treasurer Richard Smith reporter. The president read a letter about the forthcoming 4 H Bon spiel and plans were made to enter two rinks. The next meeting will be in March.
The Roblin Village Council meeting on February 8 approved adopting the 1962 assessment roll for 1963, passed by laws on enumerator appointment and water charges, authorized plans for North 20 feet of Lot 1 and all of Lot 2, and pursued a legislative change to rename Village of Roblin to Town of Roblin while expanding town boundaries.
A thief or thieves broke into the Co-op Store in Roblin during Thursday night or early Friday, investigators say. Local authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Roblin police, as damage and losses are being assessed.
A break-in at a Co op store was discovered Friday morning when back door entrance was forced after removing a window screen. Thieves gathered punches chisels and axes from the hardware dept and tried to force the vault. RCMP say investigation continues.
