J Clark Wins Legion Bonspiel At Roblin

The Jim Clark foursome from Dauphin defeated Gerry Harper's Roblin rink to win the bonspiel top event at Roblin Legion. J Laws on from Grandview beat Sam Lebedowich of Roblin in the second competition. Sixteen rinks competed, aiding the draw committee, and the Ladies Auxiliary served a buffet turkey banquet to close the day.

Donaldson Aid Fund Set Up By Roblin Legion Branch

The Canadian Legion Roblin Branch No 24 sponsors a fund for the four children of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Don Donaldson. Manitoba Leases Potash Lands to Tombill Mines

Manitoba for first time leases land for potash deposits. Hon. C. H. Witney says about 4,000 acres in western Manitoba near the Saskatchewan border, part of a 27,000 acre area held by Tombill Mines Limited of Toronto, with grades 25 to 30 percent K2O in beds six to nine feet thick beneath a salt roof. Area includes two zones six miles apart west and northwest of Birtle. Potash used mainly for fertilizers with other industrial uses.

Radar Records Drop In Speeding Offences

Manitoba reports radar use in late 1961 led to 47 speeding prosecutions per 35,185 vehicles during July December 1961. Offences dropped relative to 1960 when radar first used. A third radar unit was added in fall 1961. warnings and other penalties issued in the period.

Goose Lake School Board Sets Budget for 1962

The Goose Lake School Board set the 1962 budget at 86,514.00 at the February 1 meeting, down from 90,895.00 the previous year. Capital needs include a new roof for the Intermediate School, funded from the reserve fund with the Department. Borden Hawryluk named Attendance Officer. several payments approved to Manitoba Hydro, telephone, and local suppliers. Mrs. K. Burelle returns to the classroom after illness.

Don Shearer Rink Wins Grand Aggregate Honors

After seven days of curling the Roblin Farmers' Annual Bonspiel ended January 31 with Don Shearer’s Castleavery rink taking grand aggregate honors by totaling six wins across the two main events. R. Harlow’s local crew were runners-up with five wins as the event crowned six category winners including Hilland Event and Co-op Event winners. Finals featured T. Watson’s rink opening the bonspiel and Phillip Hanson captaining the first six ender.

Lutheran Ladies Aid Meeting at Mrs E Andres home

The Ladies Aid of St Matthew Lutheran Church met February 1 at Mrs Ed Andres home with twelve members and three guests. The meeting opened with hymn and prayer. Rev P Borchardt led Lesson 12 from What Does The Bible Say on Our Saviour in Humiliation. Members discussed Red Cross canvass and purchased an electric broom, dust mop, and waste baskets. A rug fastener and confirmation gowns were to be arranged for next time. Embroidered articles were checked in and priced. Lunch followed. A light joke about office furniture closed the piece.
