Roanoke Rapids notes several residents and visitors with travels to Richmond Norfolk Raleigh and other towns. Names include Lewis Jones J R Moore Bruce Camp Nell Haynes Claudia Taylor Violet King Nell Jones and many families and friends visiting or spending weekends in town and nearby cities.
Powelltown's South Rosemary school starts Monday September 18 with last year’s teachers back and Supt Akers in attendance. Enrollment exceeds 125 as students from River Road join. Plans call for a playground, flower beds, and a baseball diamond with student led cleanup and yard work, aided by patrons including Earl Rook.
The First Grade and High School plan a school ground flower bed. Students invite donations from friends to beautify the campus.

Miss A A Hardaway and Mrs Hardaway of Stoney Creek visited Wednesday. Vann White traveled to New York to meet Mrs White returning from Paris. The Whites plan a brief stop in Washington before Roanoke Rapids return.
Roanoke High offers a one year course in public high school teacher training. Classes meet one hour daily. those completing satisfactorily may earn a first grade certificate. Open to eleventh grade students locally or countywide and to those who finished tenth grade elsewhere. No tuition. Housing aid possible for a student to cover board. Interested individuals should see Miss Annie Workman at 11:00 at Central High School or write Miss Workman in Roanoke Rapids.
A series of meetings starts Sunday at the Presbyterian church with the pastor preaching. By Monday or Tuesday Rev. F. E. Fincher, D D, an assembly evangelist, joins, bringing a gospel program. Miss Harbeson leads singing with a choir director expected. all in the community are invited to participate.
Dr J C Braswell Grand Master of North Carolina will lay the corner stone of the new high school building tomorrow afternoon at 430 assisted by the local Masonic lodge Fitting ceremonies and music by a chorus of school children. Public invited to attend.
Nine were baptized last Sunday by the minister and three the prior Tuesday. Services are held at the Rosemary Opera House with preaching Sundays at 10 am and 7:30 pm and Sunday School at 11 am. The men's Bible Class, taught by D A Hudson, uses Training for Service by Herbert Moniger.
Elizabeth Underwood longtime Roanoke Rapids resident died at her son J M Underwood home on Jackson Street yesterday at 6 45 pm aged 86. She survived by four stepchildren J M Underwood Virginia Underwood Mrs T T Taylor Rosemary and Mrs J A Foster Schoalfield Va. Funeral at 4 pm tomorrow at her home with Rev T S Critchfield and Rev Taylor officiating. Burial in Roanoke Rapids cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Eugenia Rogers Bradley died Tuesday morning at her Northampton County home after a brief illness. She was the wife of farmer William Edward Bradley and is survived by six sons and two daughters. Funeral services were held Friday at her home, with ministers Francis Joyner and Lewis N Taylor officiating, and interment followed in the family cemetery at her father’s old home.
State and County Inspector W. 8. Chappell pursues sanitary privy compliance in the county. In Weldon last week four indictments and four convictions resulted in $5 fines and costs plus ten days to sanitize. He plans to visit other towns in the next two weeks.
