Peoples Theatre Closes Until Further Notice
The Peoples Theatre will close after Saturday night shows due to continued business decline and high operating costs. With 1,100 seats it is among the state’s largest movie houses and heating is a major ongoing expense for management. The Imperial Theatre in the South end will keep operating as usual.

Richmond Man Dies During Visit Here
E. Morgan, 41, of Richmond Virginia, died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital this morning after a week with acute grippe and acute hepatitis. He was visiting friends here Monday when stricken. Funeral services will be held in Richmond tomorrow.

In a drizzle this morning parade by 500 United Textile Workers members moved through Roanoke Rapids. Miss Janie Wells Dies At Home Of Nephew J C Wells
Miss Janie Wells aged 71 died Monday morning at her nephew J C Wells home on Jackson Street after a two week illness. Funeral services were held at Williams Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon with Reverend J H Bynum officiating and burial in Cedarwood Cemetery. She is survived by a sister Hattie Wells and three brothers George T Wells Clinton D T Wells Farmville Horton Wells Miami.

Call Off Special Deputies in Halifax Board Meeting
Halifax County Board of Commissioners met to address the Rosemary Manufacturing Co strike in Roanoke Rapids. Sheriff Johnson had called about 150 county citizens to serve as deputies, but the plan was rejected to avoid provoking unrest. The board considered troops and asked the Governor to review dispatch.
