Charley Barkley Homefrom France War Hero Return

Charley Barkley of Rosemary, a WWI veteran who sailed June 14 1917 with the first convoy and landed June 25, 1917, is home visiting family. He describes frontline experiences including being gassed twice in the Toul sector and wounded by a sniper in May near Contigny, with his horse killed and him later treated in hospital. He recalls the convoy crossing and notes no submarine sightings and plans to return to duty if needed.

Town Commissioners Hold Regular Meeting in Roanoke Rapids

The Roanoke Rapids Board of Commissioners held their regular monthly meeting at the Treasurer’s office. Discussion focused on cement floors for sanitary closets in the town project and the Roanoke Mills Company mill village L R 8 closets. Cement Products bid did not include floors, but the company agreed to install at about one fourth actual cost to avoid misperception.

Rev A G Wilcox of Brinkley ville conducted morning and evening services at Roanoke Rapes Baptist Church. Large crowds greeted him as residents recalled his early role in the town and praised Roanoke Rapids progress since his last visit over twenty years ago. He was hosted by J K Dickens.

Mission Services At All Saints Church Begin This Week

The mission services at All Saints Episcopal Church began Monday night with Rev. Isaac W. Hughes from Henderson N C as missioner. Services are held nightly at 8 15 through Sunday night with sermons described as powerful. The public is invited to attend.

Pipe organ arrives for Roanoke Rapids Presbyterian Church

The handsome pipe organ ordered months ago has arrived and will be erected soon. It is described as one of the largest and finest in the section, with the purchase funded largely by the generosity of Mr. Sam F Patterson.
