Roanoke Rapids Board Defers City Jail Location
About 40 citizens gathered in the Municipal Building courtroom to protest placing the proposed jail there. The Board of Commissioners met Sept 12 1939 and decided against jail location in the Municipal Building without hearing the delegation, action announced by Mayor Allsbrook.

Tragic Running Board Deaths Raise Halifax Toll
Frances Warren fourteen and Surrey Keeter seventeen died after being dragged from a car on the Littleton Aurelian Springs highway four miles east of Littleton. The driver Carlton Critchet and truck driver Herman Shearin are held for a coroner's hearing. The Halifax County death toll for the year reaches eleven with four fatalities from riding on running boards.

Two more patrolmen join Halifax County before week end. One to Roanoke Rapids and one to Enfield, the latter reporting for duty tomorrow and the Roanoke Rapids officer due Saturday. The county now has five men, with Scotland Neck Weldon and Roanoke Rapids already staffed. Patrolman Rothrock stays in Roanoke Rapids to work with the new officer. no shifts are planned in the county.
