Romances NC State Softball Champions Reach Chicago for National Tournament
The Romances of Roanoke Rapids arrived in Chicago to compete in the National Softball Tournament after winning the North Carolina Crown in a sensational victory over Pilot Mills on August 30. The team, led by coach Bill Allsgood, packed up in a Virginia Trailways bus last Tuesday morning amid cheering wives and heirs bidding farewell.

City Boy Joins Circus Dies In Truck Accident
Thomas Moore 19 son of Mr and Mrs J C Moore Route 1 Roanoke Rapids N C was killed instantly in a circus truck accident between Dardanelles and Russellville Arkansas last Monday night. The Barnett Brothers Circus reported the death in a telegram to Miss Elizabeth Brown Roanoke Rapids. Moore had worked for the circus for months and was riding on a truck when he apparently slept and fell into the road and was run over by a following truck. The body left Arkansas last night and will arrive in Roanoke Rapids Saturday. Funeral services not yet arranged.

Protest Voiced Over Halifax School Site Plan
At a Halifax meeting September 4 County Commissioners and the Board of Education paused work on the new South Rosemary elementary and high school near New Hope School five miles from Roanoke Rapids after 50 to 75 district residents protested the site. While most objections focused on location, many residents opposed any high school in the area. The State Education Department had chosen the present site, where foundation work and a tool shed have begun.
