Textile mills grant new wages and paid vacation
Roanoke Rapids textile firms Patterson Mills Roanoke Mills and YM Rosemary Manufacturing announce a voluntary wage increase approved by the National War Labor Board. The new schedule sets 55 cents per hour minimum pay, 5 cent raises for current rates, third shift premiums, 8 hours pay for 7, and one week paid vacation after a year. Vacation period begins in July and August 1946, computed at 2 percent of prior year straight time earnings.

Captain Pattison Widely Decorated War Hero
Captain Robert Pattison III of Paoli Pa and Roanoke Rapids wife of Ann Elizabeth Akers has 20 months of European theatre service. He wears six battle stars and the ETO ribbon and holds unit citations from Brig. Gen. Timberlake and Gen. Patton. Pattison earned praise for 98 aerial engagements 46 planes destroyed and 42 ground actions including tanks bridges and bunkers across Belgium Luxembourg Germany and more.

Car Wrecks Order of Day Sailor Killed
A sailor stationed at Hampton Roads is dead after a crash on a curve outside Jackson on Wednesday night. Three other accidents at the same spot involved a War Prison Camp soldier treated at Roanoke Rapids Hospital and later sent to Camp Butner. Wet roads are blamed for the skidding crashes. the sailor’s identity and home are undisclosed.

Lexington Man Dies Suddenly at Bus Station
D. G. Rowe 37, Lexington resident and Carolina Coach Company manager at Petersburg, died en route to Roanoke Rapids Hospital after collapsing at the local bus station. Survived by wife and four children, services planned in Lexington.
